Well I've finally landed an aussie classic to keep my Merc & BMW stable honest
Similar to Cees story on his Ford Bronco, the Statesman is a totally different experience to Pagoda or german car ownership.
Parts are extremely reasonably priced. Lots of readily available factory upgrades to engine, suspension, brakes etc. And it is just a great car to drive that is virtually bullet proof.
Mine is a 1982 model with factory 5.0 litre V8 and automatic. Has air con, power windows, cruise control, central looking, etc. And she handles really well for a big car.
Our American colleagues will no doubt see the GM genetics. I think the aussie cars were well built (not over engineered) and had a robustness that gives you confidence to drive anywhere. Engine upgrades can be mild to wild (anything up to 500hp is easily achievable).
Though not as elegant or precise as the Merc/BMW models, it is easy to drive,and a relaxing experience on big trips.
This one is a keeper for me ! I am in the process of upgrading shocks & suspension bushes. Beefed up automatic and performance exhaust is next.
