Pistons set for 250sl
« on: March 12, 2021, 08:29:24 »
Hi guys , I was looking around to have an idea about the cost of an engine rebuild and it seems that pistons for 250sl are very difficult to find . I wrote to mbclassic.de and they don’t know if or when pistons for 250sl 82,5 and 83 will be available again . The same thing in sls shop .
What is the source to buy pistons for a reasonable price in Europe ?

Maura
I’ve contacted the SL Shop in UK regarding your request

This is their response :
we have pistons everywhere from our Holland haul of parts.
There are quite a few variations on sizes, US/UK models.
I am sure we could help but would need the specific car and engine details to help

Thank you guys . What is the best brand of pistons for our car ? I was wondering why mahle has stopped selling the right pistons for 250sl . Because they have in stock the size for the 230 and 280.

Sorry I can’t help with that one, maybe others can advise, just say your call for help and no one appeared to reply so asked the folks I use. Maybe others would know?

Thank you guys . It seems that sometimes the pistons set for our cars disappear and re appear again after a couple of months. What do you think is the best brand for our pagodas ?

Mauro, i have been checking that as I saw your need and dealers have pistons for 250SL, but nominal (82mm). I did not write it because you said you wanted oversized. But I am writing anyway, in case there is some change.

Gentlemen
what is your opinion about bushing or slaving? I know, that this in not kosher, and many mechanics do not have this know-how,
but my mechanic rebuild my M129 engine in this technology and I do not see any difference in the work of the engine.

What is important for this discussion in such case mostly you do not have to buy the pistons.

so Maru probably you do not have to purchase new pistons

As you may know, this technology is used very commonly here in Poland. There are highly specialized shops who do that (then there are others who do heads, etc.). You do need pistons often anyway. They usually go back to nominal. I just did that for 190SL.

Sleeving an engine block is not that unusual. It is common practice especially on diesel engines, which often times come with sleeves from the factory. Original piston size can be retained in this way. However the original pistons are often worn or damaged and need to be re-worked or replaced. Piston ring grooves wear wider and piston squirts wear as do wrist pins and their bores.
