Soft Top Cover Trim
« on: February 05, 2021, 20:51:02 »
I was looking at some photos of the very original 1967 230SL, and noticed the "chromed" trim on the front lip of the soft top cover (at arrow in photo).  My car ('66 230SL) has a black plastic edging there.  I looked at the parts manual, but could not identify this trim piece in the diagrams.

So, first, is the chrome-looking piece correct for later 230SLs, and second, assuming it is, does anyone have a part number or source for this trim?

      Thanks!

Thank you, Pawel!

Because the part currently on my car is just a single, press-on plastic piece, I was not looking for two pieces.   :P

There is a mounting clip shown next to this part in my parts manual (113 988 01 78, diagram part #32), and it says the car needs 12 of them.  Do you know if these clips are needed to attach the garnish mouldings?  (I assume the two parts just butt together and do not have anything covering the joint between the two pieces?)

         Thanks again,,

Hello David,
yep, you need all 12 of them to hold the trim channel in place and there is no cover plate at the joint.
The clips go over the leather/vinyl fabric as you can see.

I should have mentioned them...
A 113 988 01 78, they are available from Mercedes, at least here.
Unfortunately the strips are not, need to find them elsewhere...

Thanks Alfred and Pawel,

I did find the strips in a couple of places online, but as they seem to be about €250-300 each, I think I may have to do without them for a while.    :-\

     Thanks again,

Yes, these prices can be very painful...

You may want to post on Wanted To Buy or set a search on Ebay or mail the internet shops on ebay, if I may suggest.

You will find them at a reasonable price sooner or later.

Hi
I don’t know if you going to get this thread update or w.. but .. do you have any clearer pictures of how those clips attach to hold the horse shoe chrome trim?
I see your picture but it’s very blurred

I miss comments from him as well as TylerS.  Both are from the San Diego area and very knowledgeable. I’m sure JonnyB stays in touch with them but it’s been a long while since either have posted.  It’s a real loss!

Brennie,

Watching my upholstery guy, he attached the clips (at even spacing) to the material first. Once they were all secure, he then pressed the trim piece into position until it was firmly seated.  Hope this helps.

Thank you Len
I now see where the clips fit
It’s a question of which way round the clips go..
I’m hoping that when I get to the car it becomes obvious..

After you get the clips attached, the trim piece is easily pressed into position. You’ll hear a loud click when it seats properly. It’s unmistakeable.
