My car back home
« on: January 28, 2021, 01:20:43 »
Today started the build. Going to reinstall the sub-frame, rear end, & drivetrain, then send it back for the rest of the painting.

Sitting here with COVID, I have no one to help me get the subframe attached to the body except two small dollies, 1x4x28 inch plank, and a motorcycle floor jack. Not bad for an 71 year old I think.

CJ,  I like your dolly setup.  Can you please send a few pictures of how you attached the car to the dolly using the jackstand ports. Or even other info about the dolly.  As Dirk stated, he's right behind you in a rebuild...., and I and right behind him and I need to get my car body to a paint shop (without any suspension parts, nor an engine, attached to it) I live about 30 miles from Dirk, great guy!

Congrats on getting your car back home. I'm sure you feel some sort of progress is actually getting done. It's a hell of a task to rebuild a Pagoda in my opinion, which I am finding out too.

BTW, I see an MG in the background, I have a'54 TF that I did a ground-up restoration for my father a few years ago. finished it in 2001 and he drove it for about 15 years, it's awesome.  He purchased it in pieces in 1965, I got it done for him... took me 3 years, 3,000 hours, $30k dollars, 3,000 beers and many arguments with the wife.  Dad as passed away (2017) and my mother gave it to me. It's a show winner, but I prefer to drive it instead of showing it.

Cheers and thank you,
JohnnyC.

The cradle that I made I used the jack points to secure it to the body. I used 1.5x6 inch treated wood planks bolted in a "T" fashion on another 1.5x6 and made it the length of the passenger compartment, then length of a one inch angle iron in front and back to tie both sides together. The dollies where for moving the subframe and rear end into position then slid my motorcycle jack under the frame for lifting up into place.

Thank you for the info CJ.  The TD looks really nice.  Did you rebuild it?

Question..., What did you use to fit into the jacking points, threaded rod? And then bolt it to the 1.5x 6 at four points?

I would think if threaded rod was used it would need to be somewhat insulated within the jacking points as not to induce damage to the interior of the jacking point.

Cheers, JohnnyC.

Nice door fit!  Real glass square tail lights?  Is it early enough to not have the tubular steel reinforcement hoop under the scuttle?
