M127.II Head removal.
« on: December 14, 2020, 23:40:15 »
The engine is on the stand. There is additional support at the front to provide equal weight distribution across the block. All support equipment has been removed already.

Next task is the cylinder head removal. I’ve researched quite a bit to confirm my theory and according to all the documents I’ve gone through the front four (2 inside the oil galley and 2 front right outside) 8mm bolts can be removed prior.
Next we will go in 3 stages (from outside to inside) to loosen the head bolts.

Is there anything else specific to this engine that I should be on the lookout for?

I rebuilt the engine in my 280sl 1970.  I did encounter a strange coolant leak after the full rebuild (torqued down head to spec etc) and I had cooleant drops leak from one of the manifold bolts that go into the side of the engine. It finally occured to me that these bolts in the side of the engine on a few areas actually go into cooling channels. Make sure you use thread sealant on any studs going into the block just in case.

The head is off the engine. It all went quite smooth.
I’ll be disassembling it in coming days.
