230SL Hood Safety Strap Replacement
« on: November 15, 2020, 15:31:35 »
The safety strap on my 1964 230SL was looking shabby so I went on line to find a replacement. Most all that I found, wanted to sell brackets and fasteners along with the strap and they were not cheap. Found suitable strap material on eBay for $1.49 a yard. Shipping was nominal, so for less than $6.00...replaced the strap.

Great find.  Can you please tell us who the seller is, or some other related reference?

Cheers and Thank you,

The strap above will work fine and at a great price.  The woven pattern is different than the original.

If you are going for the anal retentive “authentic”  look take a look at this.

I'm interested.
Were the straps the same for all models - 230/250/280SL?
What was the original color?
BTW, these look like the straps used in the soft top elastic straps by mrfatboy? ;)
Thanks

Nice work.
My late 250 sl has a replacement hood, painted black inside, with no body number stamped and no strap. Plus no holes to accept a strap.
I would like to install this safety strap. How would I install ?
Would I just drill holes and use a SS sheet metal screw , both on the bonnet lid perimeter structure and on the perch holding the bonnet spring holder ?
Thanks,

Yes that's how it appears to be on the hood, self-tapping screws through a flat metal plate into the aluminum. On the body side the plate is attached by one of the bolts that hold the 'perch'
I can get some photos and measure the locations of those holes if you need - let me know.
Until you get that strap in, be careful about opening the hood in the wind.

I have the holes in the hood but no strap... my car is dark blue, are the straps always "beige"  or sometimes grey or black ?

During this rainy WE i have made my hood safety strap ...!
I have found a "beige" salvaged safety belt from a crashed car ( washed +++ ) , and made with a aluminium plate  a bracket to fix downside  and another one upside on the hood.

Mercedes factory had a special way of folding the straps under the attachments. I am sure the gallery would like to see a nice diagram or photos?

I recall on both my cars the strap was fixed below the Bonnet support that the torsion spring rests on. Is the additonal metal piece you made to attach the strap on the bottom required?

I have seen this "bracket" on the repair kit  somewhere....! i have just made a similar from a aluminium plate. This plate minimize the tension on one point of  the strap . I did the same on the upper plate: i have folded the strap under the plate .

DaveB, yes that would be great if you could provide the measurements and an installed photo.
I bought the kit from Buds Benz and want to install.
