Vintage/Classic Cars in Commercials
« on: September 07, 2020, 14:00:09 »
There are quite a few commercials out there with vintage/classic cars in them. From the usual American Muscle to Volkswagen Rabbit/Golf to AC Cobras (replicas). Always on the lookout to "spot a Pagoda", I found one that piqued my interest:
A close-up of a couple driving in a car on a country road (trees all around) The woman is driving while the man sits in the passenger seat, lost in thought and chewing on a Twizzler - that's the advertising object. What caught my attention is, that you can see a small triangular pivoting vent window in front of the side window, which was popular in vehicles of the 60s and 70s.
There is no way to make out what car it is.
The last car I owned that had that feature was a 1961 Fiat 1500S Cabriolet.

Mike, are you referring to a vent window like this?

Yes. These are the windows. Went out of 'fashion". But as you show the picture of the Alfa GTV, I think my 1978 Spider Veloce still had these windows and AR may have carried them into the 90s.
maybe it was an Italian thing.

Early 911's have them, so not just Italian.  My '51 Studebaker pickup has them as well so they were around for awhile.

Those wind wings were just a great and handy item.

I saw a classic Mini this weekend, well actually an Innocenti, and it had the wind wings. So perhaps an Italian item?

Almost American cars into the mid-60s at least had them.

On a tangent and for a bit of fun.
Film makers make the same universal error whenever there's a classic car in one of their films.
Any guesses what it is?

To me, the cars used often look too 'clean' and not in normal use. But that's probably not what you are after?

That is exactly what I was after!

You rarely see a dirty classic car in a movie. Presumably because the people they've rented them from like to keep them clean. In the real world in the times the movies are set in there would have been plenty of dirty cars. Have a look at any street scene set in times gone by and you'll see that all of the parked cars are immaculate let alone any "panel rash".

Haha, glad I guessed it. Of course, I had an unfair advantage, as for some years I owned the 'exception that confirms the rule' ... the El Camino from My Name is Earl, with major panel rash (that's me and the Camino, with Lac Leman, better known as Lake Geneva, Switzerland, in the background):
