MB battery discontinued?
« on: August 27, 2020, 22:09:38 »
Just spoke to Tom at the Classic Center in Irvine regarding current battery numbers for the W113.  He said the battery has been discontinued and I will have to go to Interstate or someone else.  Anyone find a work around for this or another Mercedes battery that fits?

I use part # A 000 982 31 08. Sometimes you have to trim the edges on the base.

Or you can use a standard replacement battery - a number of them out there.
depends on how "original" you want the car to be.
May want to try a search as well, a number of threads around this - I know since I just bought a new battery a week ago!

Here is what I used when my MB white battery gave up. https://www.pepboys.com/bosch-premium-battery/product/9073762

Pretty benign looking and it does say Bosch! For my W111, the size they had fit pretty well. And it is not that expensive either. Interstate has begun making their non-AGM batteries more colorful which I don't like. Bright green doesn't do it for me.

I have begun to view batteries and tires in the same vein. They both last 10 years and will need replacing. Why buy stupidly expensive replacements when in 10 years you will do it again?

Unfortunately those Bosch batteries are not sold in pepboys anymore at least in San Diego.  I think the Group 24F they sell is now a Champion.

A decal and some paint touch ups and it looks vintage.

Do a search for here for pictures. There have been recent posts about it.

hi Pat, my MB battery (https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=16906.msg186955#msg186955) expired 3 weeks ago and I went through a similar adventure - contacted Tom at Classic Center, spoke with (5) MB Dealers in the Metro-Atlanta/Macon area, searched on line, etc.,,,,all no go. Tom says MB batteries are no longer produced and they now use Interstate batteries for cars in their shop. I ended up going to Pep Boys and picking up a 24F Champion. I would have preferred a Bosch but unfortunately (and as noted by mrfatboy), PepBoys no longer carries Bosch.  I removed the "Champion" decals from the battery before I installed it to make it more discreet.

I guess I'm too anal about too many things, and I'm getting worse, but I just couldn't bring myself to install a Green Interstate battery in my 230SL.

About a year ago I needed a replacement battery, and did talk to Tom at Classic Center, he told me same story that the battery for our W113s was discontinued. So at that point I started calling a round to MB dealers up and down the east coast to see if they might have a leftover MB white battery NOS (A 002 541 87 01 26), and low and behold I found one. So you might try checking with MB dealers.

Pep Boys (at least my local one) shows the Bosch battery, but won't allow ordering (ie, no quantity).  Can they be shipped?

Well,  I went to Autozone and bought an inexpensive Valucraft 24R because it had the simplest least adorned case.  It is a little narrow but otherwise OK. I stripped off the decals and added an Ecklers “Tar Topper” that I modified by sanding the yellow caps to remove the logos and repainting them yellow.  I topped it off with a Bosch decal I printed from the files that alpinaltd was kind enough to supply to the club.

This was the last Bosch 24f battery Pepboys made right before PagodaFest.  They even removed the raised acid black caps that I had in my version a year earlier.

Add some yellow/orange caps and a Varta or Bosch decal provided in our tech manual and you are golden👍  Have fun with the caps. Your choice. 🤣

$100 (on sale & a 7 year warranty) what is there not to like.  No offense, I’m not a fan of
Green or white batteries if you are the type that likes to open the hood and show the engine.

I've been using a battery that fits my 2006 Corvette C6 for the last 10 years or more. Slightly shorter length wise but works great. Fits in the tray and the top hold down fits.

If any of you have a spare proper Varta cap from the original battery I would be happy to 3D scan it to reproduce it so that it can be used as a mock up on modern batteries.

I did that with Varta cap found on e-bay, but it is not exactly the cap used on batteries that were fitted in our cars. You can see it on the picture attached.

BTW: fitting of the hood stripe is corrected, do not laugh.

Here is a picture of 49er’s original Varta Battery as delivered in 1968.

I wonder if Alpinaltd can do a 3D rendering of one of caps with his mad skills 😀👍. As you said, from there one could 3D print them, paint and apply to the battery for that vintage look.

I am pretty sure the Valuecraft and Bosch batteries are the same.  The Valuecraft has exactly the same case.

Hmmmm. Not my engine photo but this one is. The Varta's were not a very good battery and had a pretty short life span. Back then, K-mart sold a battery that fit perfectly and came with a lifetime warranty. They didn't make much of a profit from the one they sold me originally ;). I use a "World" battery now which is black and fit's perfectly. It seems even "lifetime" has has an expiration date.

Lol. I have that picture also. Must have mixed them up in my Varta battery pic collection.  Do the caps look different between the pictures or is it my old eyes?
