Anyone know what glue this is?
« on: August 07, 2020, 22:21:53 »
Hi,
I am installing my carpet and besides the normal contact cement there is a glue applied to the transmission tunnel that remains tacky And is actually still tacky 50 years later. This allows the carpet on the tunnel to be removable to access the three position solenoid etc.

Does anyone know what glue that is?

What color is it? Could it like a body sealing caulk?

It’s amber like a contact cement but it doesn’t dry fully like one.

I did not use any adhesive at all for the tunnel carpet piece. Glad I didnt as I have already had to take it out to replace a disintegrated shifter bushing (manual).

Shvegal, I agree with specracer, do not glue the tunnel carpet.  It doesn't need it and it is very convenient if you need to access the tunnel from above, such as changing the shifter bushings.  Mine is also not glued and does not move around.

hello Shvegel, I too agree with specracer; I wouldn't glue the tunnel carpet. Bud's restored my interior a few years ago (did a beautiful job too!) and they used contact cement on the tunnel carpet. Later, when I needed to replace my shifter bushings, getting the carpet loose for access to the shifter was a real headache. I didn't re-cement the carpet after replacing the bushings and the carpet is just as secure and stationary as it was when cemented. respectfully, charles

I will most likely leave it as the original glue is still tacky.
