Late 280SL gas cap (in any condition)
« on: July 27, 2020, 18:23:58 »
Looking for a MB *late* 280SL gas cap, the one with a centered key hole that accepts a two-sided key.  Condition is not that important: missing key, damaged, corroded chrome,.. would be OK.  I just bought a new cap from George (Authentic Classics) and sent it to Tom Pelkey in Wisconsin to have it re-keyed to the master key of my 1971 280SL.  Unfortunately the new cap sold by George doesn't have the holes under the gasket, as described in the technical manual, that allow it to be opened for re-keying.  Tom tried various tricks without damaging the cap, but nothing has worked.  It would be very helpful to have an original cap (in any condition) to use as a guide.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is going to be a tough find since the double sided keys were only on 70 and 71 models. There is a non chromed cap on eBay (you are probably aware) with the ribbed perimeter and MB logo but it is for a single cut key. It was probably off a W111 or W108 being non chrome.

I have a chrome gas cap that is in great condition.  It has the key location in the center of the cap with a two sided key.  Numbers on the back are TA001 107.  Don’t know if this what you are looking for so let me know.

Yes, I am definitely interested in this.  Could you please PM me photos of front and back of the cap and asking price.  Thanks.

Sorry, this looks like the early 280SL gas cap that I already have (and is not correct to my car).

Here is a photo of the key. I am not familiar with the two sided but this looks like it has two sides.  Let me know more about the keys.  Thank Jim

Have you tried to talk to a Mercedes dealer? A couple of years ago I ordered a new gas cap with the lock tailored to my key code (280SL should have the same key for all places). It does cost some money, but as you are after details of originality...

Unfortunately, the gas cap with the two-sided key is NLA from the dealer.

Jim: the key looks two-sided, but to be sure could you please post a picture of the front of the cap without the key? The correct late 280 cap has a centered key hole.  Also, does the key lock and unlock the cap properly? Many thanks.

Maybe try this one (undefined key): https://classicparts.mercedes-benz.de/tankverschluss-158622

Locksmith can try to make it for the key number.

But this part number may not be the last version of this cup. It may be up to chassis 10355.

Indeed, this is the earlier version that uses a one-sided key.

Hello Lakis,

The late 280 style gas cap A000 471 4730 hasn't been available from the MB dealers for quite some years now.
Authentic classic had one a while a go but extremely $$$ but you may check yourself.

If I were you just live with the early style gas cap for the time being.

Just my 2 cents ...
