Eejit VW driver, as the Irish would say.  Almost looks like more damage to the VW.  That is going to be one hefty insurance bill.

Interesting colour - and two-tone?

Doesn’t seem to be a Pagoda colour?

The color looks like Mercedes 463 H (Copper), which is not uncommon on 230 SL’s. The car is all one color.

I agree it is all one colour.

I was thinking it might Tunis Beige.

I have never seen a Copper car  - it must be such a rare (and cool) colour. Do you have a photo of your car you could share?

Tunis Beige is a good option too!  It appears we each have a personal bias  :)

Here is a link to Copper Metallic (463 H)

Here is a link to your Tunis Beige Metallic (462)

VERY SIMILAR

A picture of a 280 SE is attached below, which I believe is Sand Beige metallic = 476. This color is also very close, but was not, to my knowledge, a 230 SL option.

None should not be confused with Bronze brown = 461 which is much darker.

The bad thing is after a colishion like this is, the value of the Pagoda is less and the driver will always be reminded of the bad luck day! For the loss in value (should the owner ever decide to sell) will the Pagoda owner never be compensated. That is the bad news in this case. Glad to read both driver and passengier are okay.

Hi Thomas,

That link to 463 Copper Metallic looks very different to the way it appears in the Tech Manual (see attached). Are you sure they are the same colour?

Rob,

I have been caught with the wrong colours when ordering some paint based on what i thought was in the Tech Manual.
The colours presented are sometimes altered by the camera settings, or the printing process and then by how it appears on your computer depending on what colour settings each process has used.

Garry,

Yes colour swatches, etc,  can be very deceiving  - but that appears too much to me.

I am also aware of the colour variation with different light - especially with metallics. When I got the dash resprayed on my 906G the panel beater I used at the time mixed up a batch and painted a small metal surface and then called me to tell me I must have given him the wrong code because of the large variation. When I went there it did look much darker. He held it up to the car to prove his point - we then turned it flat and put it alongside the hood and it was indeed identical.

Rob,

Interesting, as I also found that the dash as a vertical surface appeared very different to the horizontal surfaces and had a lot of difficulty in matching colour and it is a solid colour, thankfully.

I did a partial repainting across the boot edge to guard so trying to match 55 year old paint at one point.

Is this generally true - that metallic painted cars have non-metallic paint on the dash?
I'm about to do some touch up on my dash and it appears that the paint is non-metallic (vs the metallic paint exterior 180G)

Rubbish ....!

Garry?  :o
You have long enough been member to know this I assume ..... ;) ;) :D :D

Yes, of yourse!
Dash has always been painted in body color - nothing else!
So, if your car is 180G, so this should be your dashboard's color as well.

 ;)

Best,

 :o Eeeek!

Garry...!
Aplogies, yes, you are so right. ;D
The dashboards are also non-metallic in metallic-painted cars.
The clear coat on top of the metallic base coat is always non-metallic...
Eeek!

Totally forgot about that ...

Yes, I was asking only whether the dash paint was metallic or not. Of course it should be the same color as exterior! 8)
No metallic on the dash it is.

Gary (with one "r") and Achim,
I am about to paint my complete car (180G) and if I understand you correctly, I should tell the painter to get some non metallic for the dash only? I was not aware of that. I assume the reason for the nonmetallic is less reflection and easier on the eyes?

No, just paint everything 180. Then clear coat, or whatever technology you are applying.

This is a very difficult color for the painters. Do not let anybody tell you, however, that it cannot be painted evenly - it obviously can, but, as I said, it is difficult. Paint all the elements in one go. It is difficult to match the color if you leave, e.g. hood to be painted later.

So: body, doors, air inlet, glove box cover, transmission support, hood, trunk lid, soft top box cover, hard top (if same color), hub cups (if same color, less important if slightly different shade achieved later) - all in one go.

Wheel arches, under body - body color.
Trunk inside and trunk lid - black/dark grey (check on the forum, books are written about it).
Soft top box inside - same black.
Engine bay - body color (here for engine bay and hood I finished with matt varnish, I read factory did not apply clear coat here).
Rocker panels - black, painted somewhat uncarefully with a brush almost.

Enclosing the picture of my dash 180G (old steering wheel, wrong speedo, both replaced now).
