1964 230SL Valve Cover Gasket - Glue to Valve Cover?
« on: May 04, 2020, 15:03:13 »
I am replacing the valve cover on my 230. Should I use adhesive to glue it to the valve cover? I have not in the past but do get a little oil residue on the sides of the cover.

Certainly not. The rubber seals can be re-used if they are not brittle (bend them; if they crack bin them, if they don't re-use them). The three bolts that secure it should only be tightened very lightly and always use new and correct copper crush washers (not copper seals). If you're getting leaks from here after employing the correct method then you may have a problem with the cylinder head face not being flat but it's most unlikely.

Fit the gasket firmly to the underside of the valve cover outside of the car, then lower down as one piece. Gasket should be snug to valve cover and not fall off.
