The Pagoda story of Peter and Dianne in London, Canada
« on: April 11, 2020, 14:27:58 »
Dan (Benz Dr) is almost finished putting the pieces of our 1965 230SL together. We went to his shop last week on a sunny day and took the car for a nice drive. Here's two short video clips.

It's been a long five years since Dan and our coach builder started taking things apart. We are so much looking forward to picking up the car soon, even though there are still a few items to be taken care of. I will post again.

Glad to see you soon be at the finish line ... yes it has been a long 5 years ... the car looks great! Looking forward to short outings with you, Dan and Hugh as well as others in the London area in the coming months. With our cars one car length / 10 KM on the speedo audiometer apart we will be staying a very safe social distance apart :)

Meanwhile all stay safe!

Peter,

The wait will be worth it, it took me two years to get mine back on the road and that was only messing in the engine bay area.

Peter, super excited to get your car, mine & Dieter's out for a Pagoda tour with hard tops off in some warm spring weather that is soon to come to the "little London" in Canada!!! Having Dieter as a German engineer, I'm sure he will keep us organized so our cars will be at least 2 meters apart!

Peter, can you give us the target date that Dan has given you for delivery? Then we can get an idea when the 1st tour could happen? Be safe, Hugh

How The Story Started

I'm a retired teacher, and I have always been comfortable being the centre of attention. All right, I confess, I'm a ham & blabbermouth. But Dianne is the shy, modest type. She doesn't want me talking about her. So I'll keep this brief.

Dianne was born in Canada and spent six years of her childhood in Germany because her dad served with the Canadian military. He loved gadgets and had a taste for European style. The family had a Mercedes Ponton back in the 1960s. They drove it right off the assembly line in Stuttgart and all over the countryside. In the photo, that's Dianne peering out the back window. This is the only childhood photo that she'll allow me to post. Her love of Mercedes goes all the way back to those days. Her dad brought the Ponton back to Canada and it served as the family sedan into the mid-1970s. Then it sat in their garage in London, Ontario, for decades. A suburban barn find!

Over the years, I often promised Dianne that one day we would get that Ponton out and drive it. In 2010, I took a long look at the car and decided we didn't want to turn it into a project that would just end up being a boring four-door box. So away it went. Getting a Pagoda for Dianne was the new plan.

Peter, it has been a long road and I know it has been excruciating at times.  I remember the days when you "didn't want to talk about it".  :-[

I can't wait to see Dianne and yourself coming down the drive way in your NEW car.

That's still a fine looking Ponton.  Looking forward to "the rest of the story" (I'm sure you've listened to the Vinyl Cafe.)

I love doing online research, so in 2010 I decided a Pagoda would most suit our lifestyle, and joined this group. Any of the W113 models would have made us happy. It just seemed to me then that there were minor points in favour of each of the three models, and no serious drawbacks to any of them. White was the colour I wanted, without air conditioning, with metric gauges, and definitely a manual instead of an automatic. I found Dan (Benz Dr), who hooked me up with a fellow from the Detroit area who wanted to sell his 230SL. I won't mention his name because he's not a member here. He didn't know much about the history of the car, although he said the previous owner before him had told him that a GM executive had once owned the car. I found out later that, according to the VIN, the car was original sold in Sweden.

How well I remember taking the car for a test drive with the previous owner! It sounded fine and Dan was willing to vouch for the mechanical condition of the car, since he had worked on it a few times. At the time, the Canadian dollar was stronger than the USA dollar, so that helped me out quite a bit compared to prices since then. The paperwork involved in changing the title from USA to Canada wasn't really difficult, although I had to take the car on a flatbed to the Canada Customs office at the Bluewater Bridge, about 35km away, to fill out the forms. The I chose the licence plate "D 230SL" from the Ontario government, since of course "230 SL" was not available. (Still haven't found it. Anybody?)

This photo shows our car a few months later, at Dan's shop, before it earned a roadworthy certificate. Ontario has more stringent standards than Michigan.
