An Ebay listing for a trouble light
« on: February 29, 2020, 23:59:32 »
Every once-in-a-while, I wonder about the covered socket on the firewall beside the fuse panel. A listing for a trouble light has appeared on Ebay that looks like it might fit.

I'm not curious enough to buy it though.

It will fit, that is the proper male plug.  You can also find the plug separately and make whatever 12V accessory you like.

You can also carry a flashlight.
I use the outlet to hook up my battery trickle charger.

I got one of these off the Samba for my '66 and it works fine in the female outlet in the engine bay.

Very little reason to use it, but I got it because I like outfitting the car with period-correct details. It was made by Bosch and actually available for many years by the time my car was manufactured.

Totally inauthentic, but I used a DIN male plug from ebay along with a scrap piece of aluminum plate to mount a retractable trouble light from a 1990s Chevrolet pick-up under the hood of my 1961 300 SL.  Works beautifully and if it offends anyone in the future they simply have to loosen two original bolts and it's gone without a trace. I think the DIN plug cost around $3.00.

Folks - come on - we all know this is not really about having a light in the engine but about having something cool that was made during the era of the car for this function.

I also sometimes use a $1000 iphone as a flashlight in the engine, but then remember that it costs 100x more than a flashlight if i drop it.   So usually, I use those cheap LED lights that can be dropped and work great.

BTW - I also have a Kaco light and also got it through SAMBA.  When you find the same part under VW, it seems to cost 1/2 as the same part under Mercedes.  I think I paid about 70euros for a new-old-stock one in the box.
