Author Topic: Sealing Speedo Drive and Gear Shift Shaft in Automatic Transmission  (Read 2086 times)

Is there any way of sealing the speedo drive and (I think it is next to it) the gear shift shaft in automatic transmission without taking the transmission out of the car?

I know it might have been said somewhere, I looked through two pages of posts, but I have not come acorss a straight answer... sorry for asking.

did you solve this problem?
Afaik the manual gearbox has a sealing ring (pic) at the speedo drive but not the automatic transmission.

Mine was leaking at the speedo area and while my memory of what exactly happened is faded, I think it is just a simple O-ring. I believe the O-ring fit on the housing that held the speedo cable. I don't believe there was anything else to replace. Could be wrong, but it solved my problem.

Thank you, I did not start to fix it. Since I did not know if it is possible to do it without taking transmission out of the car, I decided to:
- seal the oil pan, drive this season as is and watch it (the oil pan seal was leaking, the wet places could have been the result of drops being blown around by air flow)
- take my spare tranny to the shop for overhaul
- swap them after season and seal properly the current one

Yes, thank you, I found this one. Indeed it seems to be the one wwheeler is talkig about. If I know it makes sense to try to replace it with gearbox in the car - I will do it.

I did the repair with the transmission in place. It was a little snug back there, but doable. The part that has the seal ring ( I think is an O-ring actually) is the housing or #112 270 01 13 "bearing liner". You have to remove the piece and the groove for the seal is on the OD of that piece. The housing clamps the speedo cable and do not over tighten! It does not make the seal better and you will only crack the housing. My housing has a crack and I bought a new for down the road. 

BTW, I just checked my parts list, and #000 997 68 45 is indeed an O-ring and what I used to fix the speedo leak.
