Crankshaft Bolt
« on: December 30, 2019, 20:02:52 »
As part of my engine reassembly, I will need to install the CS pulley and dampener.  I have the "stretch" bolt with the waist area and it looks remarkably good.  I checked with my local MB dealer and they show it as available but nowhere in stock (US or Germany).

I wonder what the length of a new bolt is?  I could measure this one and see whether or not it has stretched/yielded in service.  Are there other tale-tales that I should look for?

Thoughts?

Thanks Joe.  If it is common practice to reinstall the bolt that was there, I'm happy to do so.  This bolt looks very good - no distortions or visible damage.  Does the BBB indicate how it is to be tightened?  I will look but I'm sure that you know as well.

No special procedure, just make sure to index the pins correctly in the front balancer, they are slightly off-set and must not be installed 180 degrees off
. Some minimal information in the late BBB 03-1/1, 03-1/2. Torque is 21 + 1 mkp (160 ft/lbs). Brace the flywheel to keep the crankshaft from turning when applying the high torque.
