1966 230SL Master Cylinder
« on: December 24, 2019, 00:15:41 »
I find rebuilt brake master cylinders on line but no rebuild kits.  Does anyone know where the rebuild kits can be sourced?

Thanks,
Harry

Harry,

We're currently going through the brake system of our 1960 220Sb W111. We stripped down the master cylinder and wheel cylinders - fortunately they only needed rehoning and cleaning.
But I did research parts availability - the only source for kits that I could find anywhere was on eBay from an Argentine manufacturer. They have an extensive range of rebuild kits for older Mercedes and other makes.

Quality looks ok and prices are good. Feedback is good too but I have not bought anything from them yet.

Worth a try??

Thanks for the response.  Looks like the url leads to a 1959-1963 220b/22sb.  I wonder if that fits the 1966 230SL?  Maybe I can find that out.  Thanks again.

The classic center may have the kits.  I bought one from them a while back...

I wouldn't even think about rebuilding a master cylinder. If it doesn't hold pressure or leaks down I'll only use a new one. Aside from all of the potential liability issues, do you want to try your luck?

Thanks Dan.  The MC appears to be working fine and hasn't demonstrated any of the symptoms you highlight.  When I removed it from the booster to paint the booster, I found some fluid in the booster.  Not a lot and it looked old.  But I thought to be safe I would rebuild the MC.  I've done this many times over the years to replace worn rubber seals, etc.  (Used to be "standard procedure".)  Never had an issue (other than to correct a problem that was there before the rebuild).
