Data card 280sl Toronto Canada?????

I recently purchased some items from Toronto Ontario Canada  and this data card was in the lot.  I would love to get it back to the new owner of this 280sl.  Wish I still had my original one.  I will send it along if we find out where the car has gone.

The option codes are confusing me on this data card.  Is it a California Coupe or not - would there be a separate code for a California coupe?

No soft top, colour matched hardtop to body and power steering and automatic?

Yes, there is (was).
The option code for a California coupé version W113 is SA 417 (well, 41/7 then). It was available as an option with the start of 250SL production, i.e. January 1967, and visible in the M-B Price list printed at that time.
The card here has code 41/5; i.e. no rear bench seat at the back. Just the regular soft top compartment, albeit empty :)

Nothing confusing on this data card.

Hans is right - again, as usual.  ;) 8)

The option code 41/5 or 415 if you prefer to say so
means the car was delivered with hardtop on but without softtop.

But this is not a 41/7 car then, the so-called 'California-Coupé.

This car here has got 41/5, that means hardtop on, without softtop but with (empty) softtop compartment.

No softtop does not mean automatically that the car was always a California Coupé.

The 41/5 option was pretty common in the old days.
While I do not have an exact number of how many actually,
but this code 41/5 can be found quite often on datacards.

Many of these cars were retrofitted with a softtop later on during their life
- either a new one
or a used one from a (most likely poor 230 SL) donor car.

That's why used (and good) softtops are so rare for the Pagoda - and so expensive.

Not so for the W107, they cost far less than a fifth of what a comparable W113 softtop would cost you. Because all W107 SLs (the R107 cabriolets) had softtops, there were no exemptions. That's why the ST is not rare there.

In summary,
there were two option codes for a Pagoda without softtop:

1) 41/5: car with hardtop on and with regular softtop compartment, but empty. Thus, no softtop colorcode on the datacard.

This option was available for all three Pagoda-SL versions: 230 SL, 250 SL and 280 SL

2) 41/7: car with hardtop on only, but no softtop comparment. Instead, rear seat bench.
These are the so-called 'California-Coupés'.

This option was available only for the 250 and 280 SL
but not for the 230 SL.

It is all that easy to read datacards - and understand.   ;) 8)

Our data card shows the 415 code. We are definitely not a California coupe! I take it for granted that someone added a soft top later. Dan says our soft top frame is from a later model, which suits me fine.

Achim, that's fascinating

So what was behind the drivers seat of a 415 car? "Normally" you'd see a shelf or kinder seat, or (in a 417) a bigger area and the CalCoupe bench seat. Was the 415 just more carpeted hardboard?

Everything just as a regular W113 Pagoda; except that the soft top frame and fabric is not installed from factory.
The rear lock and release cables (mechanism) are there, mounted in the soft top compartment under the regular lid

The 41/5 cars are just ordinary regular softtop-compartment Pagodas -
just only missing the softtop itself.

Thus..., James, these cars could be ordered with Kinderseat or without - just in the same = identical way as for regular (softtop-containing) Pagodas.

The question then is, was the 41/5 car less expensive than a model with soft- and hardtop?

Hello Achim and James and everyone,
so far as we know, the parcel shelf and soft top compartment were never changed before we owned the car. Now that the interior has been rebuilt, the coachbuilder and the carpet installer made it all look the way I figured it looked when it left the factory. As for the soft top frame, it's now been completed with new canvas, too. I never thought about looking for part numbers on the soft top frame. Is it important? Dan might know where to look for those numbers and, if we find them, I'll let you know.

BTW, not to jump the thread, but those of you who remember seeing our car at the Meeting of the Clans in August might enjoy this video of Dianne pulling in to Dan's shop last Friday, when we brought the car back from the trim shop in Michigan. As usual, Dianne thoroughly enjoyed driving the car, even without the hubcaps, grill and hood. The car runs beautifully and it was great fun riding the ferry across the St Clair River.
