Search for Celette kit
« on: November 14, 2019, 10:10:11 »
Hi all,

I am currently restoring a 250SL Pagoda, and desperately need a celette kit in order to be able to do a proper job.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I also leave some pictures, because I know everyone likes pictures! ( and you can understand the extent of the work that has to be done in order to save this car ).

Feel free to contact me directly or by DM.

I guess, I am not the only one who does not know what a "Celette kit" is... ;)

Those are some really sad pictures and I can see why you need something to keep the frame "true" - it must be annoying as they seem very common for things like 911s but I think Colin Ferns had to build his own
Best of luck on coming up with something and on getting the car back

Though if someone locally to you had the "premium" setup you could borrow, could you set it up for a Pagoda?

Mike, please.....! :D
Michael, also bitte...!   :o

Of course you know what a "Celette" is.  ;) :D
You have been long enough in the Pagoda business (40 years ...) to know what that is. ;D :D
And if not....  mother Google helps.  8)

A "Celette" is a brand name for a very common maker of a body shop repair bench.

That's a very heavy duty metal frame unit made of heavy double T-bar steel beams, see pictures attached.
You can use and place all sorts of cars on it, but in order to fix these cars properly, individual tool sets are necessary to attach each individual car's body accurately and tightly.
Remember, these work benches were not primarily designed to "restore" very old & rusty Pagodas and such but to provide body shops with a frame and guide to repair car accidents.

While the Celette lower main frame repair bench is pretty easy to come by - I think they still even produce them ...
.. the special tooling for fixing the W113 body is not. That one is really specific and some different parts are necessary in comparision to the more generous W110/W111 special attachment tools.

That's why some restauration guys are so heavily after these kits.

... and enjoy!

(und wieder ein Unwissender weniger auf der Welt .... ;) :D ;D )

The Celette bench is used together with the M-B chassis drawing to ensure that the unitary "ponton" body structure of the car is true, level and that both sides are mirror images.
We are talking within millimetres here! This is a prerequisite for the axles and wheels to run true, and for a correct steering geometry.
A well welded body structure is in its turn the basis for a high level of accuracy when fitting the doors, trunk lid and hood. It will also enable the HardTop to fit onto the body like a glove...  A contour gauge is useful as well.

Uuuh...I am sorry, I always thought the frame bench was spelled "Gilette". Must have had too many unnecessary wet shaving sessions ::) ???

The photos above are from Kromm.  Obviously they know where this kit is.
