new original Mercedes Benz hood
« on: October 25, 2019, 19:51:37 »
I just heard a story that when you buy/bought a new original Mercedes Benz hood, it is a bit oversized.
To fit it, the edges must be adjusted/sanded to the right size.
Is this correct?

Thanks for help.

Yes, I believe that to be true. They have to be hand-fitted so that the gaps are the same...

Yes, Peter.

That's true. A new hood is oversized.
It must be ground down to fit the (your) car.
Lots of work - but often the only way to obtain a perfect gap.

Fewest owners actually do that - the new hoods are just painfully expensive... :o :-\
Ask me how I know.... ???

Hi Michael, Achim, thanks for information.

I don’t need to replace my hood fortunately, but the front part of the car has been changed.
Now the gab on the front is a bit too small on some places.

I believe you can/are supposed to close the gap by adding tin as needed.

If the gap is too small you can file the bonnet (hood) to get the gaps right.

I had a similar issue. Your bodyshop can adjust the gap according to your existing hood, if he is moving the front piece.
It comes down to the expertise you hired for the job. You should not leave the shop until that is done right.

Stickandrudderman is correct.  The hood gaps are corrected by filing the edges of the hood.  Very few body men actually own a body file anymore but they are out there,  I just stripped and reprimed my aluminum panels and there were file marks all over the panels under the original primer.  The doors must have really been fussy because almost the entire skin was filed before painting.
