What to scavenge off a 280SE
« on: October 18, 2019, 16:32:37 »
My brother has a W109 in his barn that he was storing for a gentlemen that passed away several years ago. Interior, trunk and trim are all removed and are in disarray. What parts if any should I take from it before he disposes of it?

I would be interested in the cylinder head, if it is available. 8)

Why not take the whole car and part it piece by piece - no rush, and very therapeutic!

Is it a 280SE (108) or a 300SE (109)?  Either way, small trim items, switches, relays, lamps etc.  If it's a stick, the pedal cluster (fits a 113)!  I stripped one a couple years ago, kept finding things!  Jon

To be honest I am not sure yet if its a 280 or 300SE. I have to go take a closer look at it. All emblems are stripped and it covered up.

That is what I am suggesting to my brother given the quick response I received from all of you on this. My brother is going blind and can't part it out himself and I don't have the space or time to mess with it. On the other hand I have another brother that used to part out cars and he is retiring in a few years. He could probably do it and share the proceeds with my brother that owns it.

Thanks gents!

Air suspension cars have a completely different rear axle. They look the same, and some parts are, but the air suspension axle is useless for a pagoda. You can use a lot of the parts that are inside it though.

300SEL has chrome trim around the side windows. That's dead give away.

Take everything you can since it is guaranteed that when you finally dispose of the corpse the next item you or a friend needs will be the one item you failed to salvage.

I would grab the air control valves for sure. Some of the heater lever parts are the same with small pieces within the assembly being the same. Those pieces are NLA so the're all useful to have around. Pull the brake force regulator.

Thanks gents. Talked to my brother and he is going to keep the car for parts and just get rid of some of the other cars/junk in his barn.  I’m already thinking of a bunch of small stuff like clips and bolts that I am short of.
