Axle shaft bearings query

Hi all,

I have removed both my axle shafts from the differential, just looking at the play in the bearings.  Is there a defined way to check them?  I can initiate some rocking between the inner and outer race in both bearings.  Is this normal?  I cannot see any movement vertically between the inner and outer race.

The car was a project and not running when I acquired it.

I just found some details in the Technical Manual.  I didnt realise the RH and LHS bearings were different.  This clarifies why one of my bearings was showing alot more side movement than the other.

Pretty much normal for the right hand side with the self aligning bearing to have a bit of end play. Not so much for the LT side.

Best to replace all the bearings and seals while the unit is apart and you will not have to do it again in the near future. Original brands are available from after-market resources for big savings on the parts. In any case, if you slightly pinch the bearing in a vice and rotate the axle, if bad, you will feel the bad spots in the bearing as the axle turns. Pinching the bearing in the vice simulates a load for testing the bearing when the axel is turned.

I shall do some searching of the forum for the two bearing part numbers.  Out of interest do you know if the bearing seals are off the shelf items also?

I think they're more likely to be MB parts. Most bearing places you go to will be industrial application only and if certain pieces cross over to automotive that's incidental. Some automotive seals and bearings are propiretary so industrial and automotive operations generally steer clear of each other.

Order two of those kits since the seals and gaskets are the same on both sides, but use only one "ball bearing" for the left side. Get the special expensive "centering bearing" by itself.

A 000 981 05 06 this is right; this is the self-centering one (over $100 at MB)

For your Info:
The right side bearing is a spherical roller bearing "20208-TVP".
I do have an extra one made by FAG, but shipping to Europe is probably not feasible.
Just in case, I am asking $80.00 for it.

I have picked that up from some of the other forum posts and Pawels links. 

I have asked for a quote from MB direct as I want new seals also, I can then compare costs to buying the bearings and seals seperate.  I shall let you know if I would like your bearing but I think import duty from USA would kill it
