280SL Supplementary Cooling Water Bypass Kit Wanted
« on: September 17, 2019, 00:33:10 »
Looking for a MBZ Supplementary Cooling Water Bypass Kit (see Retrofit Cooling Modification in Tech Manual) for '71 280SL, that connects the rear of the cylinder head with the suction side of the water pump. See attached photo.
This part was described as part of the MBZ Service Bulletin #116, file group 20, dated October 1970 - Subject: Supplementary By-Pass Cooling. Water Line Installation to Prevent Overheating / 6 Cylinder Fuel Injected Engines (1970) Air Conditioning (which I'd also like to get a copy of). Thanks! Gary

If you can’t find an OEM, Bud’s Benz sells their version of the same.

It really baffles me why Mercedes makes buying their parts so difficult. Even the classic center website offers no way to order parts in a user-friendly way, the way any other successful commercial retailer does. It directs you to some 'epc parts catalog' that you have to pay a subscription for, I mean come on. No wonder alternative sellers do relatively well. It's actually not so different for BMW or Volvo here in the US, just a nightmare to try and figure out how you can buy what you need from the dealer, so I end up buying most parts, including original manufacturer's, from retailers like FCP Euro.

I like to use this website to look up parts and get the correct MB part numbers;

https://7zap.com/en/

Click on "Catalogs" , then click on the Mercedes Star, next click on your model number etc. Choose your category. When the parts diagrams come up, click on the part you need and the part number will be visible on the left with brief description.

Next go to this website:  https://www.mbpartsworld.com/  Don't bother to "select vehicle".  Just plug the Mb part number into the search box on the upper right . If available, list price of the part will come up. I believe you can order parts from this site, discounted from list price.

I have used Joe’s method with other parts sites. There are several. I record their price (anywhere from 25 to 30 percent off list) send it to Tom at the CC and he matches it. Provided he has it in stock which is usually the case. Tom is also on the ball with any part number changes.

Thanks, Joe. Excellent help for general part lookup - thanks!
For this part I've been everywhere from the Classic Center to Stuttgart, with no evidence of the part anywhere. Fortunately, the fine members of this forum have been helpful.

Thanks, Michael. Since getting the car and having all the fluids replaced, as well as a new fan clutch and 9-bladed fan, I'll see if I still need it next summer. Heading into fall now, I should be ok for the time being, but I'll keep you in mind next year.
