My 220SE Sunroof Coupe up on Ebay
« on: August 30, 2019, 20:45:45 »
Last Wednesday I decided to put my W111 up on Ebay. Auction runs through a week from tomorrow. I just saw a beautiful W111 3.5 sell on Bring a Trailer for 97K. It is amazing to see the the huge numbers the 3.5's are getting compared to earlier versions. Mine is not as nice as the BAT green W111 but still a great driver quality coupe. I would be happy to get 1/4th of what the BAT car just sold for.

I have always said that the earlier cars are more luxurious and better appointed. Unfortunately, what seems to command the higher price is horsepower which the 3.5 has over the six. The smoothness and power of the V-8 does transform the W111.

But for me, the six is fine and easier to work on. You can’t beat driving down the road staring at the gauges mounted in the fabulous wood binnacle!

Hi Wallace,
I do agree... I solved the the issue by putting the wood binacle in my 1970 3.5 Coupe.
It looks amazing ! ( a little old with the new!)
The only problem I had, is the shorter 220 dash pad had to be fitted as well as the wooden-binacle is slightly longer than the 280SE leather unit.
Great result!
Cheers
Matt 😊

Wonderful! I actually did the same on my ‘68 280SE and I love it. You are correct about the dash pads being different. With the wood binnacle, the pads fit into the housing and are slightly longer. With the leather binnacle, the pads butt up against.

I have made other changes like using the older chrome rear view mirror and changing to “Euro” style door panels. All of which are easily reversible if needed. I also plan to change the headlights to the 220Seb configuration with the active side lights. That will eliminate the need for the bullet turn signals. Lots of fun.

There is a 280SE 3.5 for sale in Europe that I have had my eye on as the price is attractive. It is silver with baroque wheels and a burgundy interior and looks really plain.

The black roof and matching wheel hubs transform your car Matt. It looks fabulous. My interest is renewed !!

Thanks Peter,
The colours work well together and give it a touch of class! The roof & caps are actually metallic anthracite grey...
best wishes
Matt😊

Hi Matt was just searching through last night and stumbled across your post. I have a few cars but I have never seen a more beautiful W111. I have a 68 250se and 3.5 Cab but I think yours is the best color combination I’ve ever seen. Congratulations you should be very proud of having and maintaining such a stunning vehicle. I’d love to see it one day in person as I originally thought you were located in the states.

Keep in touch and please send me a few more pics

Regards and a happy New Year for 2020

Matt can’t send anything on that email address keeps bouncing back. You have a space after 1955 so maybe you sent it wrong.

Would it be : Mathew.stickley1955@gmail.com
