Unknown pagoda toy model
« on: February 27, 2019, 04:43:42 »
I picked this up from a friend in Japan it seems very old it is made of aluminum possibly pewter? I have vacation coming up in two weeks and intend on putting it together and being painted but I'm looking for anyone who has any information on it it looks like it used to slide into a box no markings on anything.  The scale I guess would be 1 43rd? Thanks in advance for any light anyone can shed on this model kit

Well, this is model CL17 Mercedes 280SL in 1:43 scale by company SMTS in the UK (Sussex) that you have there.
https://www.smtsmodels.com/
A little film (video) there on their Website, showing the people and history of SMTS; as well as explaining the rotational casting method.

The Pagoda model in their range seems unfortunately to be "currently out of production".
I enclose a picture of an assembled and finished SL model car

how many of these would have to be ordered in order for you to re-start production.  I would love to have 1 or 2 and I think others on this forum might also like to buy them?  I'm not sure of the forum rules on this so someone might also inform us if this type of question and answer is OK.  BTW - VERY cool model - I would love to have one

This is cool!

I was thinking of disassembling something that is available on the market and painting it, but this would be better...

If you are prepared to go to resin, French Provence Moulage have a very nicely detailed kit, also 1:43 scale. See below
You'd have to search for it, however.

Hans, I will definitely do, thank you! I could not spot anything so far... great lead!

I once met a guy on one of the classic events with whom you could order a model of your car. It was great - he did plates, details, scratches - after a visit and documenting your car with photographs. But I wanted to do it myslef.

Just to add to Pagoda model car kit history, here is the Airfix 1:32 scale plastic kit.
It was introduced in 1968.
In the US, the same model kit was marketed with other box art, by MPC.

To me this 1968 Airfix 1:32 scale model is among the best if not the very best scale model of a Pagoda you could get for your money back then - even to today's standards !

Unfortunately I messed mine up pretty much when I tried to assemble it back in 1974 as a10-year old boy ... :-[

.... but the 280 SL is still there. :D

Just another resto I have got to do on the live-long agenda.... ;) 8)

Yes, Mark...,
For sure.
It's a phantastic model,
but a new/modern one (and pricey BTW).

But the one(s) we were referring more to were old models from the old days (60ies) and so. ;)

For a couple of years (during my US days) I collected Pagoda scale models like crazy. :P
I have stopped that in the meanwhile.  8)
After a couple of years "ebaying" around you (or I) have got 20 or so different nice models ..., hanging out on the shelves and only accumulating dust ...
One (model) is nicer here, the other one nicer there ...
After a couple of years it started to be boring to me. :P

Instead, today I like more to play (tinker and drive) the 1:1 scale W113 model(s) made back in the sixties by a Stuttgart based manufacturer .... ;D ;D 8)

Enjoy!

I have a couple of Anson 1:18 models and a Minichamps 1:43. The Anson's are not as nice as the Schuco, but rather affordable, compared to that.
The Minichamps is a Paul's Model Art edition and is in the same color as my real car. That's why I bought it (way back when Germany still had DM currency, for DM49.95)
