Trunk Lid Lock Adjustment

Do you know how I could adjust the trunk lid lock so that the lid can be closed a bit lower, to make the gap under the lid edge smaller?

The gap between the rear panel and the rear edge of my trunk lid is a bit too wide. The trunk lid in the rear is also a bit above the fenders. What is preventing it from coming a bit down is the new seal (but that I can press down) and then what prevent the lid from coming down so that it rests on buffers is the lock.

The upper part you can move left/right or forward/aft or bring it down with shims. But you cannot move it up so tha the lid can go lower.

The bottom part of the lock - you can as well move it a bit all directions (the holes in the rear panel are bigger than screws). But there is no sufficient movement down. You can shim it, but then it also goes up, not down.

I started thinking that, perhaps, one of the POs, for some reason, filed down the edge in the lock upper part that hooks to the bottom part so that the lid is not held down enough - but it is difficult to see traces of this activity and I have no new upper part for comparison.

Do you any trick there?

I found two threads on this topic on our forum, but with no resolution.

Seal is another story - I have the MB seal, correctly placed - holds the lid up, I cannot get rid of it...

This may not be much comfort, but when I changed my trunk seal with the correct MB seal years ago, I had pretty much the same problem, to the extent that the trunk would open by itself when I was driving.  After a while (probably over a year) the problem went away and my trunk sits properly when closed (and stays closed).

Also: just occurred to me - I will never be able to press the seal to a proper size if my lock does not allow to close the lid low enough.

If anyone had a picture of a new upper part of the lock so that I could look at the hooking edge to compare it's height with mine - would be very helpful!

Pawel, this may help, i have just  replaced the original trunk seal in my --65.
and i purchased  a  seal from Pelican parts, reason i required a muffler as well , so ordered ,
both from them, mainly over the years have used them alot for Porsche parts.
The trunk seal i have just fitted about  2 weeks ago, and it fitted perfect,so good i still have
not even used and contact glue, and the trunk clicks down perfect.
Here is the funny thing , its a cheaper  URO make, about  $48.00,and i never buy   URO parts for
Porsche especially electrical parts, as they fail all the time.
Re about the adjustment  on trunk lock,remove the bottom half  complete if you have not already done so,
quite often there will be thin shims or even junk and dirt under that, it should only sit about  1mm or less,
above the trunk lip ,try that first ., then go  from there.

I looked at the ebay item and indeed it could be that the "hooking edge" is higher than in my lock. I will keep looking at this listing, especially that the price is ok, even landed in Europe.

I did dismantle the bottom part of the lock - also to see what is holding the lid to close lower. I do not have any shims or dirt there, it is sitting low in the rear panel. I also tried to figure out how to get rid of the height of the clip for the nut...

Is the URO seal just lower than the MB one? Softer?

Hello Pawel    no its just a little softer, i  noticed the original  german seal from Pelicans
was so expensive  forgot , three or four hundred dollars. did not want to spend that amount.

There are shims under the trunk lid catch.
Perhaps one or two of those shims could be removed.
The bottom latch is a slight bit adjustable, see the catch nut holders(can move about a bit).

Thank you, no more shims.

Both upper and bottom parts of lock are slightly adjustable as the holes in the lid frame are bigger than screws diameter.

Yo ucan also place shims under bottom or top part of lock, but this is working in the direction opposite to what I need.

I began to think (but I am away from the car, cannot verify) that to lock the lid lower, maybe it could work this way:
- the surfaces to which the top and bottom part of lock are screwed are not horizontal, they are at angle
- when you move the upper or bottom part of lock back (towars the car) in their screw holes, they also move a bit down (bottom part) and up (upper part) along the angled surfaces on which they sit
- I will try to move them max back so that they are in the point where they are the furthest apart from each other (which is what I need)
- I will try this and also will try to figure out if the "hooking edge" in my upper part is worn/filed so that it is keeping the lock too high

Maybe this wil help...

I measured the opening of my trunk lid latch. After 50 years,  there was some wear and the opening measured 14.80mm - 15mm.

I have 2 shims under my latch.

Maybe the measurement will help you determine if your latch  has been filed down.👍

The 15mm is the inside square hole dimension as seen in the above picture.  Did you want a different measurement?

I was thinking what distance would be, say from the place where your upper arrow tip points to the edge of the opening (square hole). I have the impression is that this edge was filed...

If anyone still has patience - as these latches are all a bit different shapes - I measured distance between the plate and the hooking edge.

Where mrfatboy has 18,5mm I have a bit over 20mm! It may be that the latch is held too high...

My hypothesis, I think, was correct.

I got the new upper part of the lock. The opening is much smaller than in my old one. The hook edge is 2-3mm lower than in the old one. means the trunk lid edge, when lid closed, goes 2mm closr to the rear cross member edge, reducing the gap.

I installed the new one. The trunk lid is hard to close now, the seal is holding it, but I think the seal will give in over some time. But good 2mm of the gap is gone. After some time I will move the bottom part of the lock as I still have some adjustment there to gain a bit more off of the gap. Then it is fine.

I think it might be quite important sometimes to realize that someone might have filed the lockupper part hook edge to make the ltrunk lid lock easier, but then it results in bigger gap between the trunk lid edge and the rear cross member edge when you install new seal.
