Early 230 con rods
« on: September 26, 2018, 09:30:33 »
I need three early 230SL conrods.
Part number can be 1270381101 (casting number, it’s not a valid EPC number)
24mm wrist pin (piston pin, gudgeon pin) and 30mm wide at the crankshaft end.
Centre to centre is 125mm.
I have one here with the same dimensions but without the oil hole which is redundant anyway and it has a 108 casting number.
Either will do.
Please search through your boxes of bits that you never threw away!
Colin

Hi, Stick,

There will be some in Shaun’s left overs box if they are the same as fintail 220SE.
They were promised to Achim but ....

Could you have a look please?
Dan is also looking but I need to cover my bases...
The local source that Naj has mentioned has drawn a blank.

Stick I have three or four early w108 motors.  Mainly 250s.  Are you saying these might be compatible?

Measures up by eye to your measurements

That looks like the solitary one I have that has the “108” casting which does measure the same as the two I have with the 127 part number.
Be aware though that the incorrect rods are 135mm centre to centre so only 10mm difference.
Also, my problem arose because I thought I had a set of rods to match a set of NOS pistons I had used to build an engine but it turned out that the rods I thought I could use were too narrow at the big end.

Stick, I believe I have set of piston rods for 230SL. Please PM me your email address so I could furnish some pictures.

Keep in mind that there are three different versions of connecting rods and pistons for 230SL's. If you aren't sure don't guess.

Hello Stick (Colin),

Dr. Benz is correct here again - as usual. 8)

There are three different generations of pistons and associated con rods.

The one-and-only SLS overview picture tells you best of all of the story.
Albeit in German (sorry ...) it is quite easy to understand (I hope)...

https://www.sls-hh-shop.de/main/en/mercedes-230-280sl-w113-/03-engine-m127-m129-m130/03-b-info-pistons-230-280sl-r113-

The compression height of each of the three piston generations is different,
and that's why the conrods are different too ...

These are the current parts numbers (no cast numbers):
1)  CONNECTING ROD        A 127 030 0120
2)  CONNECTING ROD        A 127 030 2620
3)  CONNECTING ROD        A 108 030 2320

If I remember that correctly, Colin's 230 SL  is an early one, VIN 004000 or so....
Thus - if matching engine number is present,
you would need the A127 030 0120 connecting rod

Achim
(no extra conrods..., those are all at with Naj 8) )

(casting number, it%u2019s not a valid EPC number)

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I found the above statement interesting and I would like to learn more.
We are on the topic of M127 engine. Conrods part numbers are reflected on the casting for the first two versions (as later listed by 114015). The third and final version part number starts with 108 which leads me to believe that it came from the 108 sedan.
And quick check confirmed, that is the case, https://nemigaparts.com/cat_spares/epc/mercedes/1/m/108920/229/03/001/?chasis=10801268F
Now, here the casting numbers still correspond with the part numbers.
I%u2019m looking at he example where they don%u2019t, just like Stick mentioned.
I got the conrod with the casting number 108 038 02 01, how do I go about finding the associated part number?
