5 speed zf manual
« on: July 25, 2018, 20:46:01 »
Hi everyone, I would like to ask you what is the procedure to change the oil in the gearbox ( I have the zf 5 speed from factory ). I never changed the oil and I wanted to know how many liters are required and if there is a filter too. Thank you.
Mauro

No filter and it holds about a liter or maybe a bit more - buy 2 liters. I use synthetic ATF in mine.  Open the fill plug first so that you know you can get it out. I've drained units before only to find I couldn't refill it. I did, but it wasn't fun or easy.
Fill plug and drain are larger than the regular 14 mm used on a MB gear box.

Only 1 liter? I thought it was more. To refill do you need a special pump or you can pour the oil directly? It will not fall down for gravity? 75w90 is ok?

Dan is  one of our Group's two most experienced experts we have here and by-the-way, he has got a ZF 5-speed in his car:

It's ATF oil, not regular gear-box/differential oil.
ATF, nothing else.

See the label  here:

I use synthetic ATF because this unit holds holds a small amount of oil and I wanted all the protection I could get. You really wouldn't want to run a ZF 5 speed low on oil or run it dry.

..well you did ask whether "75W90 is ok?"...

(I think Achim is just concerned for the welfare of your rare and original transmission  ;))

Sorry i didn’t read carefully at the beginning about the ATF oil.. since I bought the car in 2001 I never touched the gear compartment and so never changed the oil. I think now is the right time to do so.
