I used to be a trainer for BMW in a past life. After seeing a picture from the shop of stickandruddermans I was reminded of the really nice fender cover we used to have at the school. I decided that I had to have a set for my garage so I stopped by the school and got the part number from a set we had there. Here they are. They are made by Datex in Germany and they are really nice with good straps and clips that keep them from sliding off. They are also very padded which not only protects the fenders but gives you a very comfy spot to lean on. Unfortunately, they are ridiculously expensive for what they are but I haven't found a source for Datex other than BMW in the US. I guess they are cheaper than painting a fender over.

They wrinkle because the curvature of the W113 is less than the BMW. I like the way they cover the fender and how they are prevented from sliding off. I do all the canvas work for the boat and have a commercial machine. It shall be a winter project for me to make a pair. Looking back, I could have used them.

Black Forest LLC had such a cover for the W111 and I have that. Not sure if they produced one or still do for the W113. Might check though. Came in a bag and everything.

I wonder if Colin would be able to share where he gets his made up: I know he has them for other Merc models as well (they are personalised to Colin Ferns and the model number)

I used to ask my students, "What do you do before you put a fender cover on?" "Look at the fender and see if there are any scratches or dents then point them out the the guy on the lift next to you. Do this before you touch the car." I have seen several times where someone noticed a dent or scratch in their car after the tech worked on it that was there before he started.

There are 4 clear rubber "clips" about 3 inches long sewn into the edge about every 10 inches that grab the lip on the inside of the fender below the spot welds.

That is about what the W111s look like. From Black Forest Heavy duty vinyl with a very soft underliner. I looked on their website and not sure they are offering those anymore. For big jobs they are great. For smaller quick jobs, they are a bit bulky and I use a gripper fender cover. Made of grippy foam material. Absolutely will not slide off.

Unfortunately, they do not have any with logos of foreign cars, e.g. Mercedes. https://fendergripper.com/

I went off to bed and forgot post a picture. But yes, that is what I was talking about. Thanks Alfred. I have them for my Roadrunner and they are fantastic and super easy to use. They last about 10 years and then start to lose their tackiness. I think they are $20 each?

Talk about sacrilege, I have the covers on both the W111 and W128 with Roadrunner logos! I'll post a picture tonight. Just doesn't look right, but works like a champ.

Those 220SE engines sure are slick looking rigs.

Very tricky to tune and can certainly test one's skills or ability to swear.

I'm too cheap to buy all those beautiful fender aprons previously shown and discussed.

I went to Dollarama and bought two "Dou-Dou", which are children's "blankies" for about $3.00 each. As shown they are each folded double and attached to various places in the engine compartment using OfficeMax file folder clips.

They are made of about the softest, fuzziest material that exists. They come in many colors, are washable and weigh almost nothing, although when doubled as shown, they are about 1/4 inch thick.

So my "baby" has, for each fender, its own "DouDou" or "blankies" to protect the paint, or me if I get caught away from home and it turns cold here in Quebec.

Mine are specific for the W113, with a MB star logo on them. I think I got them from a Mercedes dealer. They have a magnet strip on the inside to hold them

Yes!

Is that a "no-no' for SL purists? Previous owner installed it. With a toggle switch to go back and forth with the original horns.

I never really liked the sound of the MB horn anyway.
