Author Topic: MB Recommended TTS Replacement - Please Confirm If It makes Sense  (Read 3119 times)

I kept pushing on Classic Center on the TTS (A 001 545 92 24) replacement here in Europe. As we know, the US classic Center offers refurbishment for ca $600. Europe does not, just say NLA.

But I have received this through a dealer recently:
A 001 545 92 24 replace with:

A   004 545 91 24 x 1 - which is a thermo switch
A   009 545 44 28 x 1 - which is pin bushing housing
A   003 545 26 26 x 2 - these are pins
A   009 545 45 28 x 1 - this is cover for this housing

I went to see this thermo switch - it is used in M100 and M110 engines. It is a VDO switch 232-036-002-19D. I could not get its description, I just found it is a "thermo switch for a cooling fan".

A switch for cold start and a switch for cooling fan, intuitively, work in opposite directions (one switches on, the other off when something warms up). So I got confused there. But I may not know how it works in M100 or M110.

On the other hand it has two pins and the positive wire is to be connected to it...

Do you know this part recommended as replacement? Can this really be a replacement for TTS - at least: does it work the same way, meaning cuts off the ground at certain temperature? I am not after the timing vs. temperature etc., just after tha basic function - when it is over certain temperature, it cuts off the ground.

Can you comment on this?

Some years back, I noticed that the latest version of the Mercedes 280SE (1972) sedan with the M130 engine used a later tts with a plug connection. I believe the same version sedan with the 8 cylinder engine W108, W109 3.5 and 4.5 also used this tts with a plug connection. They are for cold and hot starting and have the same specs as the type in the W113 cars. These may be used in other engines ?  I never bothered to look up the part numbers but have used them as substitutes. Hop this helps.

Can you just order the part from CC US? The exchange rate is in your favor. I also believe there are a couple of alternative TTS switches with pins not screw terminals. The cover hides the fact that they are different.

The reason why I was pushing this topic with MB CC in Europe was due to:
1. Cost - the TTS costs about $1000 as such, the US CC solution is also heavy and I would have to add additional shipping costs - but I may end up doing it this way; the substitute MB suggested costs ca $120 (no VAT)
2. Some originality - I would have thought MB delivered substitute may be a better choice from this perspective than e.g. Bosch replacement

The Bosch replacement is the only replacement I found on this forum and that is what I have in my car. Works brilliant, but is not original and difficult to hide.

Wallace - what you say is an alternative, definitely so. The Bosch one is difficult to conceal, especially in the late location.

Joe, thank you for your input. I am not that fluent in what engine types some of those cars were using, but I will try to chase that. The part I listed shows to have been used only in M100 and M110.

FYI. I sent my old non-working TTS into CC Irvine as a core. What I got back was a brand new TTS, not rebuilt as they said it would be.

I think I found the switches Joe referred to in W108 4.5 on intake manifold.

Indeed we have  A0045454924, replaced by A0035459024 that are interchangeable with our TTS. But they are NLA as well.

I found another one, A0015451524 but it is also NLA.
