Stamped Production Numbers
« on: February 23, 2018, 04:48:36 »
Could someone please send me pictures of the locations of the Stamped Production Numbers on the hood and deck lid.

I'm talking about the numbers that were stamped on the hood, deck lid, soft top boot, and trans support bracket.  Thanks.

Motoring Investments website shows where they are if you look at the “Free 280SL Buyers Guide” found on the “Old Site”.

They have everyone except the trunk lid.  That is the one I need.  Did they even stamp the trunk lid?

This is a good question for all to know and I know where mine are on hood soft top cover and transmission support and hardtop.
However I do not believe they marked the doors or trunk.
However I would love someone to prove me wrong.
What other markings could there be??

Bill & Peter,
some time ago Achim posted a photo of a very early 230SL (#15) that has the Aufbau Nr 00016 and that number was stamped into the trunk lid. Unfortunately, nothing is known when that procedure was stopped.

So no 280s or 250s have these numbers stamped into the trunk lids?

I stripped my 66 230sl trunk lid to the bare aluminum. I did not find any numbers.

My guess is they only stamped the parts that were fit to the car then removed for painting.  The doors and decklid were most likely painted in place.

That makes sense with the deck lid, but I would think the doors would be painted off the car.  The complete door is painted.  Would they have painted it first then repainted them once they were on the car?

Most likely the have a fixture that replace the check. that holds it open far enough to get in the forward area.
