Provence trip (27-30 Sept) - travel arrangements
« on: January 22, 2018, 08:20:50 »
I know there are several cars heading to Provence from the UK, and no doubt a few from Netherlands/Belgium.

So... ideas for how folk are getting there, routes, hotels and convoys... Marilyn pm'd me and suggested that if we are going in convoy, early booking of decent places to stay may be a good idea.

The OBVIOUS route south is down through Reims, Troyes, Dijon, Lyon, Avignon but that's a little,er, dull

Post your thoughts, ideas and timings below.

A lot depends on how you like to cross "la Manche". Living in wet Wales, we are planning to cross to Caen, and meander down over about 4 days.

Any one coming down to Cardiff for the Hemmels visit ?

Keep well

Looks like a fun trip James if taken with several cars.

No doubt there will be slowdowns due to construction along the way.

Looking forward to September.

Dieter

PS, while in that part of the world Garry and I are planning to visit Les Ateliers Paul Bracq in Bordeaux after the Euro Event. Anyone having similar plans?

Your route is interesting but more fun to take the Route Napoleon between Nice and Grenoble

RD, I see from your route you will be passing through Carcassone.  Make sure you spend a few hours in the walled city.  Absolutely amazing and stunning.

If you don't mind adding a few more hours to the route, maybe this would be an option.

Turn left at Calais. Maybe a stop in Dunkirk then head south for Luxembourg through Belgium from there to Metz, then to Strasbough, Basel, Geneva, Grenoble and out of the mountains down to Aix-en-Provence.

As a kid I worked a summer in Les Baux-de-Provence and just love that region. London to Les Baux this way is just over 1000 miles, but a lot more interesting.

Sadly not attending but I agree with your route. It has to be the Route Napoleon.

We have stopped often in Tournus which is between Beaune and Macon. The Hotel de Greuze is good, not expensive and has safe courtyard Pagoda parking. Tournus has lots of good restaurants from Michelin fine dining to Burgundian feasting. There is also a good bakers to stock up for your Route Napoleon roadside picnic.

I generally just use the Autoroute between Lyon and the eastern Channel ports as I have never found the alternative Route Nationals that much fun. Further East there is the Route des Hautes Alpes. I have never had time to try that but that would be a lot of wheel twirling.

R-D,

I would definitely be up for joining you and Garry not the side trip to Bordeaux after the event. Please keep me posted about your plans. If we could meet Mr. Bracq, even better!

Jon and Martijn, what do you guys think? Will you have enough time?

Happy Motoring,

We shall be meandering  back North to Caen, but a trip via Les Ateliers Paul Bracq in Bordeaux looks a great route to us.

Rolf-Dieter,

Looks like we may have a few who want to do the trip across following the Euro gathering.  DO you want to take up the running to contact Les Ateliers and see if we can arrange a visit there with possible Paul Bracq there  as well?

Garry,

Will do. I’ll take up contact with Paul’s son for the Group that will caravan with us after the event. Also to see if we can arrange lunch or dinner with him and his dad. I think Boris likes to show customers his shop. Should be a great trip.

I can only speak for half of us (but will follow up) I think this would be a very cool thing to do. I have not made any travel arrangements yet. What do you expect the extra time would be? A day added on the return to Holland?

I’m adding 3 to 4 Days since I also like to go to explore the area a bit more before flying back to Canada.

I have contacted Boris Bracq (see attached) and he replied positive for our shop visit. Looking forward to it,

Let us make a list as to how many of us will drive to the shop and meet Paul and Boris Bracq after the Euro Event. Once we have a accurate count and a estimated time to visit the shop I will advise Boris Bracq of our estimated arrival time;

1 - Garry Marks & Dieter Solga in 1966 Pagoda 230SL Manual Shift
2 - Brian Akre & passenger (TBD) in one Pagoda
3 - Paul & Dolly, in a Pagoda (EYJ 123E) for the PB visit
4 - Larry and Norma in their Pagoda.
5 - Jonny B and Martijn 1967 250SL Pagoda

So far I told Boris Bracq there will be 4 cars, please confirm below who plans to accompany us and I will revise the list above then eventually notify Boris Bracq of our plans so that he may know how many of us are planning to come by and at what date and time after the Euro Event.

What limit of "number of cars should we set" for the trip after the Euro Event to Paul & Boris Bracq's shop? Please let me know.

Thank you,

Dieter

Done, see my Reply # 16 above as I've updated it.

Note to All,

What are your feelings of starting our travel after the event west on Sept. 30 (I assume the event will be completed after breakfast on Sunday 30 September - I have not seen a detail agenda as of this point in time and I know the Euro Event Organizing Team will let us know soon). We can then stop half way for the night and complete our travel in the morning of Oct. 1 and then visit the shop in the afternoon. Any thoughts?

We do have time, however, at some point in time I like to give Boris heads up as to our expected arrival at the shop and of course we like to meet his dad.
