Which way does the trunk weather seal install?
« on: July 02, 2017, 19:47:25 »
It's been five years since I removed mine and now it's time to glue in the replacement. I can't remember which side goes up, and looking at pictures on the web didn't help me decide.

I do remember that the old one didn't seal very well.

Thanks Hans - I guess I searched for the wrong term.

Just as a reminder. The search item in the upper right, under the group logo, will only search the forum you are currently reading/using. The other search link, in the line on the left, beginning with "Home" will search the entire forum.

Hello Brauske,

Neither - nor.
Both your ways you would like to install the seal are incorrect and will result in a lot of rain (and car wash ~) water in your trunk - and rattleing noises.  :o ;)

The seal should be installed that way that it comes up from the inner edge of the trunk seal groove and then bending outwards- all around.

This is the associated pic.

I find it a bit tricky to glue in the seal.
My advice (after doing this twice):
1. put it in without glue first so that the orientation is correct all around.
2. Cover the fender's etc. paint with masking tape adjacent to the seal.
3. Glue in the seal part by part, e.g. every 50 cms or so.

Good luck !

I also suggest wiping the seal down thoroughly with acetone(if it doesn't eat the seal) or alchohol before gluing.  2 or 3 passes with a new rag each time.  All molded rubber parts have some sort of release agent to keep them from bonding to the mold.  Unfortunately, the release agent residue can also prevent the seal from bonding to the glue.
