PUB 2017 Technical Session Suggestions

Hi All PUB Attendees,

As we look at our PUB Technical Sessions, we would like attendee input for possible topics. A preset list of topics and presenters is being finalized, and there may be some options for attendee suggestions.  With over 100 attendees, and hundreds of topics possible, not all topics suggested can be presented due to time and logisticial constraints, and no promises or guarantees, can be made.

Quite a few people have posted about difficulties with starting when their engine is hot or warm. 

I recall reading a thread where Chuck had installed a relay to either bypass the CSV or maybe activate it for longer to assist with hot starts.  If Chuck is available and willing it would be great to have him show exactly which relay he uses and how he wires it up to help with hot starting.  I don't know how long it takes but actually installing one might be a great session.  I would even volunteer my car for such an exercise  ;D ;D ;).

Hi Alex,

I think it would be great if we share some stories from situations we encountered whiles taking our treasure for a spin. I bet quite a few of us have a story to tell that pertains to unexpected situations we had to deal with over the years. When we share such stories it may safe someone a fist full of money once the rest of the story is told. Or to put it another way what the actual cause was.

Let me give you an example, let's call it the story of the "FUSE"

One day when I took my Blue Tornado for a spin she stalled on me for no apparent reason that I could solve at the time even after checking under the hood for loose wires, opening the fuse box and making sure all the fuses are okay. The engine turned over okay and I knew I had plenty of fuel (I never leave the little town of London without it :) ). To make a long story short, I called the tow truck and since trusted Benz Dr. Dan was too far away I told the driver take me to the Benz dealership in town.

Well I paid the tow truck driver and the Benz dealership a few days later. The combined bill was near $500.00 and I was told you had a failed fuel pump fuse also you have a radiator leak. Funny I had no radiator leak before, I did tell the tow truck driver to be very careful when loading and unloading my car and pointed out the radiator is quite low. I watched him carefully during the loading, however, at the Benz Dealership quite a few people admired my car and I was not paying attention during the unloading. Anyway radiator work another $300.00 and change.

What about the "Rest of the Story" you might ask, well ...

After posting in our forum here I learned from fellow experienced members that a) one can listen to the fuel pump working when you turn the key to position 1, the primary one beside the fuel tank b) fuses sometimes get loose and one should turn them then try again and c) fuses may look okay when they really are not. So if I would have known all this at the time perhaps I would have removed that failed fuse for the fuel pump and replaced it with a new one from the set i carry in my glove compartment and no tow truck would have been part of the story. Best of all I still would have the unnecessary spend $800.00 and change.

I bet stories like this might be fun to share and the rest of the story would be remembered to save that "fist full of money" so we can spend it on needed spare parts :)

Just a suggestion, what do you think?

I'm of the opinion that some jobs would be too difficult to show someone how to do them on their own. A timing chain replacement isn't too difficult as long as everything goes OK. Since the thermostat housing has to be removed during this job, it can suddenly turn into the job from hell if it's really seized on to the two long mounting screws. And, if you happen to break something, it won't be a fun day for anyone. In short, it can be a lot more work than it looks. However, I understand that almost any car will need a new chain after 100,000 miles and some can and will want to try this job.

I'd rather see a presentation on basic maintenance. I've found that after spending a lot of time and effort to rebuild an engine, which is something the average owner doesn't need to know how to do, they have no idea how to take care of it after they leave. Aside from getting the oil changed, they think they can drive it like an old chevy and never look at anything. You would be surprised by how many cars that have only visited here one time because I fixed everything and they never had to come back while those that come for regular yearly service never have any trouble with their cars.

 Maybe I shouldn't fix them so well........ ???

Agree!! Finding all the nipples  :P and so on. The "E" service in the service booklet covers about 100 service items... Maybe we can cover the most important ones at PUB.

Power steering pump removal and instal of a rebuild kit.
Fuel pump rebuild
Setting up idle, timing and adjusting fuel injector pump.
Thorough paint buffing scratch removal and touch ups.

Johan, I can taste them now :) I will visit them in July as well as Schöne Sterne on July 29th before returning to Amsterdam for my return flight home to Toronto, Canada.

Hi Alex,
I know a lot of members spend a fortune one having their cars refinished only to endure the pain of stone chips and scratches on their new paint jobs as soon as they try to actually enjoy their beautiful new paint jobs (such as you). Any thought to having someone cover some of the new products out their that protect our new finishes while we actually drive the cars, such as Clear Bra, Xpel or Ceramic Pro? I am having the Xpel protective coating and Ceramic Pro put on my car that I will be driving to PUB (my 280 will be half in JA's garage and half in mine), I will be happy to cover my experience with the products but maybe we can find a detailer local to PUB 2017 that can go over the cost and benefits of such products. I know if the Xpel and Ceramic Pro products work out half as good as expected on my daily driver I will certainly protect my beloved 280 with them as soon as I finish the restoration. I could ask the people doing my car if they know how to find someone close to the PUB to cover the topic if no-one in Virginia has a source already.

I would enjoy a discussion of replacing aging rubber suspension parts to improve handling.  What we can do at home, what should go to  professionals.  Any other long term maintenance items.

Hear are a few suggestions:
1. Air/fuel adjustments on the injection pump. Not the idle adjustment which is rather easy but the upper, lower and full load adjustments.
2. Adjustments to the transmission.
3. How the change out the piñon seal. Most importantly how to do the pre load.
4. I would like to rewire my euro head lights. All of the wires are cut off and I would think it would be an excellent DIY on how to properly solder in the connections. This would be an excellent skill for everybody to learn.
5. A good maintenance schedule check sheet. I created one which I have printed out and put it in the glove box.

Maybe under a different thread, but I would love to get together and find a vendor who could design and make Bra's for our car for road driving.  It would be worth a few hundred to me to have one that would fit properly.

Alex,

I know there is a call with the organizing committee tomorrow and hopefully all of these ideas will be vetted at that time. I have a couple of items to consider as well:

1.  How to install a hidden antenna - demonstration and extra units available for purchase should one or more want to do this under the watchful eye of our instructors;

2.  Ultrasonic cleaning.  I have a relatively large cleaner (Branson) that I can make available at PUB if members have a delicate part that is suitable for cleaning.  This could be a demonstration as well as a hands-on event.
