Can anyone advise me as to the intended purpose of the three small holes in the right inner guard of my '68 280SL, immediately behind the brake fluid reservoir. I can see no evidence of a previous bracket or attachment, but the holes are clearly visible from within both the engine bay and mudguard. Photos attached. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi Pip,
The metal is shaped in a distict little landing or mound and the Lefies have a relay mounted on that little mound. I cant remember which relay, but someone will pipe up with the answer. It could also be the voltage regulator.
Yours being a later model could have an alternator with a built in regulator, hence the omission of a VG.
In the mean time I'll see if I can make out which (relay or VG) it is.

Indeed it is for a bracket that mounts the voltage regulator and small fusebox for radio (if applicable). LHD

Thanks to  Chris and Tyler for enlightening me. The thought did cross my mind but I dismissed it, thinking MB would be unlikely to leave three potential sources of corrosion naked and unfilled. Now I can ignore them. Cheers.
