W111 + W113

Hi everybody!


Just joined the group, although I know it for some years now.

I'm a proud owner of a W111 220 Seb cabriolet and a W113 250 SL

Pictures:






On the picture the w111 is still with the import plates. Bought it in Spain and brought it home to Portugal  ;D

Welcome,  the W111 is absolutely stunning. 

You are in a place that I have to visit.  My wife promises me that when our daughters are done their University that she will take me to Albufeira.  1 week in the Azores and 1 week in the Algarve.

Both are wonderful! I am partial to W111s though and I love its color combination.

both are verry nice cars , and i think jou can use them a lot in cabrio mode in  jour country ,

1 question....
does your 250 SL still have a rear Dutch number plate?
Looks to me a little bit like that.

No. Its a Poruguese license plate.

The old Dutch and Portuguese license plates are similar. Mine is PN-99-00

 The w111 got its historical license plate and now is CB-48-69

As a young boy we spent many summers in Portugal. I remember going with my uncle to the Gargem Autorvel in Carregal do Sal and see license plates being made and replaced on some of the cars there.  They did what they called a complete lavagem car wash.  Not only was the ouside washed along with an interior cleaning but they also washed the underside!

Some more facts about the cars.

The w111 is completely original and never restored. Chassis number ends in 50004. Its a 1963 car registered on the 1st of January 1964. It belonged to a french consulate in the US. It was then brought to France  (and its owner became a minister in the french government). Later it was sold to Spain, to a gentleman who dealed in exotic wood for all of Spain and Portugal. It was then sold to me.

Its an automatic with kuehlmeister air conditioning (it was removed from the car at some point, but I have it with me).

It has the round horn ring and ridgless white steering wheel. Unlike earlier cars, it has the small plenum chamber. 14 inch wheels are not original, I believe.

The w113 is a 250 SL that started life in the US also and the original color was 291H (Olive green).

It was kmported to the UK on request from the wife of a well known portuguese TV star. The wife gave him this car for is 40th birthday. Some years afterwards he lost interest and the car was sold to a doctor up north. The good doctor found out that the car had some niggles and wanted to get rid of it. So it then became mine. Some niggles are still present, like the fact that the car has no rear brake bias valve, but I find that that is not a problem at all. Interior is completely new but with the wrong type of leather and carpets. It's not a concours car, but I like it and use it without restraints.

Cool poster. Question on the W111 - I noticed it had the rear US style license plate lights but not the bullet turn signals up front. You said it was used by a French consulate in the US. So just curious to what country was it imported to? I would love to rid my '68 W111 of the side markers and bullet signals and return to the super clean lines like you have. Not sure I can convince myself to do it. Yours is beautiful!

The w111 was sold new in the US. It's a US version.
