Soft top color
« on: November 15, 2004, 13:28:24 »
The colors on my 230SL are all original: body and hard top are green (268 -- dunkelgrün), interior is cognac leather (216).  The soft top is black (720), and I can see why it was wenig gewünscht, as it looks pretty dark on the car.  I'm planning to replace it soon, and am thinking about changing to tan.

What color soft top do other green car owners have on their cars? (A photo would be nice)

That is a Beauty !!!!!

 Euro,  too.....
 Stick???

 Anyway,
The trim code you have also came factory canvas top 730/979. Beige
so, that would still be factory color combo...good choice with the
contrasting seat/seat backs/rugs combo...

Are your Bundts 6" ..or 6.5
 Thanks

Tan would look great with that color combo.

What are people's opinions about keeping tan clean as apposed to keeping black clean?

I have a tan top on the Tobacco Brown beauty and the car lives in New York City which is a little dusty from time to time...

Once a year cleaning with Ragg Top can do a good job of keeping the tan looking good...

Tan goes very nicely with the dark brown body and I suspect it would look very good with green also...

Don't know.  They were on the car when I got it.  How can one tell -- is it marked on the wheel somewhere?

They sould have an MB part number and a size, something like "6.5J14" or "6J14".

I have a tan top on my 268 green 280SL.  I also have the cognac interior.  I can not get pictures sized correctly to post, yet.  But currently the hard top is on; winter is almost upon us.  My data card said the car originally came with a green top.  I would like to find green fabric to replace mine in the future if I could find it.  The convertible top just does not get much use so I think the original green top would be nice to have; different.

What type of paint was used when you got your repaint.

It was pretty obvious -- should have looked:  6J14 H2.  What's the H2 mean?

GAHH does have a green Sonnendeck top, but from the color sample it looks pretty dark and the inside color is black.  I do want tan inside, as in my current black top.  Does anybody make a green/tan top?

Hi , I have a Dark green 250SL with  tan interior. The hardtop is green as well, but the Softop which is made in Australia by local supplier is Dark brown , and I think looks quite good. I will post a photo if you are interested in seeing a Brown one.

I have an 462 (metalic beige) body with 268 hard top and wheel covers (interior is also dark green). After a couple years searching I found a "correct" green cloth in Germany.  The top fits and was constructed well.  Frankly other than having the car complete I would not have gone thru the soft top issue.  The car is rarely driven (61K) and when I drive it the soft top is down or the hard top would be on.   Anyway my two cents.

Have You ever thought about a bright green original
German mohair "Sonnenland" hood ? There are three
different greens available. (Also with tinted rear
plastic window).

Black or dark Grey softtops look best on two-tone
cars with black or dark grey hubcaps. I have a dark
grey hood on my two tone ivory/black coloured 230 SL.

Anyway You 230 SL looks great with the new alloys :-)

I was under the impression that ALL soft tops were beige on the inside ??

My newish black German top is beige inside and I believe the visors were too, they are now black, to match the interior colour of the hard top !

Any piccies of the green interior ??

Soft top color question:

I am replacing my worn out soft top and I would like the original color on the new one.
The color combination is all green. 834 Moss green metallic and green interior. The old (probably not original) soft top is light greenich. How can I figure out what the original soft top color shoud be?

On a signal-red W113, has anyone seen/used a soft top color other than black/charcoal, or tan?

Per, you should get the datacard from the factory if you don't have it already.

Hello Chris,

Most likely you'll get bored to hear my opinion.
You have just such an excellent beautiful two-thirty including your softtop. I wished to have my car half that good.

If I were you I would keep the top and you can exchange it with a green Sonnenland (whichever original "gruen" is still available today) once your current one starts to fade.
Please don't try to improve perfect (or almost ~) look or items.
Just my 2 cents ...

my 250 sl was originally green. It had a white cloth top that was dry rotted and rusty when O bought the car in 1986. I changed it to black. Next time i will change to tan.

Achim, thanks for the compliment and the advice.

My soft top still looks decent but I was considering replacing it because it isn't really up to the standard of the rest of the car.  However, I may well wait a while before replacing it, because I do use the car almost entirely with the top down or the hardtop on.

Two questions:

1. Neither GAHH nor Miller's carries a green soft top.  What's a good, reasonable source for a green Sonnenland top with tan inside?

2. The material in the current top is good, but the thread in the seams is starting to age.  Is it feasible and sensible to try to get some of the seams resewn as a stopgap?

Chris
