trunk mat
« on: May 31, 2016, 23:50:13 »
Appreciate if anyone can advise where I can get a new trunk mat for my 1970 280SL at a reasonable price or the material I should look out for to make my own.  Thanks.. John

Dependes on which mat you are looking for. There have been changes. After the spare was change to vertical, the large mats were the same. These should be available from the usual suspects (Millers, Authentic Classics, Buds Benz, KK). The mat under the spare on the 280 SL is different from the 250 SL, the cut outs for the jack and such are slightly moved, the new ones also are not finished on the edges with a ~3mm smooth edge. The current ones are cut from ribbed stock.

Hi Rutger, When you got your mat from MB Classic - did it have the 3mm smooth edge.

Thanks

I also bought my large mat from Mercedes Classic Center. The small mat under the spare is no longer available. You can get the small ones in black but they are not original.

Hi, I don't look at this site everday sorry, here are three shots of my MB Classics boot (trunk) mat.  There is a smooth edge but it is a lot bigger than 3mm more like 10 or 12mm.  You can also see there is a scolloped, or radiused edge on the back corner. The shots are taken of the left hand side as you stand at the back.  Hope this helps

I think the 3mm edge Jonny was referring to is on the small mat located under the jack and spare tire on the rt side of the trunk. Would love to find a correct version. As Jonny stated the ones for the 250 are different.

Yes, referring to the small mat,  I only had a (poorly) calibrated eyeball and memory to go by.

Thought I would add a picture of the small mat on the 250. Mine is hard and brittle so I left it in place for the pic.
You can see the "anthracite" color difference 50 years of age makes compared to the new large trunk mat.

Hi, it sounds like there are a lot of us that don't have the original small trunk mat and it seems they are unavailable in the right colour.  Could it be worth looking at getting a run of these made for a group  within the Pagoda SL Group, like the firewall covers that were made several years ago?  If there was enough interest there should be a manufacturer that might be willing to do a run?

I have a 1966 230SL that has the original small mat and it is different than the 250SL mat shown in this thread.  It has 2 additional holes cut in it for the lug wrench and the threaded rod for aligning the wheel lug bolts.  Does the 280SL have an even different mat?  There may be several versions so which do you make?

Also, I have owned this 230SL from new and the original large mat looks exactly like the one in the 3 pictures in this thread.

Not almost 50 years--a little over that.  I have the original registration dated Feb. 21, 1966.  My wife and I drove it for about 50,000 miles as a daily driver and it has been sitting in the garage for years and years with a few hundred miles a year--sometimes less.  A couple of years ago, I decided to start driving it more.  The more I drove it, the better it drove!  It now has about 54,xxx miles on it.

About a year and a half ago, I had the drive train redone.  New most everything from front shocks and subframe mounts to new pinion seal in the back.  Made a big difference in the way it drove.

The paint was old and looked a little "tired" after 50 years.  In February, I took the car to The Color Works in Los Lunas, New Mexico, for repainting.  I just got the car back a couple of weeks ago with the best paint job I have ever seen.  I know nobody ever heard of The Color Works or Los Lunas, but it is one fantastic paint job!

Some might call it a restoration but I consider it more a refresh.  Car has always been good, just replacing a few things to make it a little better.

I realize this is not the place to tell the whole story but as soon as I get around to taking a few pictures, I will post.

I would ask you to consider putting together the story and the pictures for an article in Pagoda World. I hope to have one from another original owner in PW 19.

I edited my post above. The mat is the correct anthracite color but 50 years of age have changed it darker.
