Hi,

Just moved from the UK to the US (again...) and I had to ditch all of my Autoglym products at the 11th hour just as my container was being loaded (the shipping agent spotted them and because many are petroleum based he refused me permission to load them - heart broken; that lot was worth hundreds).

Anyway, I find myself in the US of America with a filthy car and no polish, waxes or gin (they also made me ditch my gin). The gin I can fix (have fixed) but I've tried to find autoglym here and it costs about 3 times what it costs in the UK. To that end, could someone recommend a suitable substitute to me, please? I'm not after a concours wax or a super high end product. I am after something like my brilliant autoglym car wash, resin polish and high gloss over coat that seals it. I have 3 cars to do (one pagoda), so don't want to be spending a fortune, but would like to have something good. I also need to take care of leather upholstery and need something to remove silicone from inside one of my cars (the autoglym tar remover that I had to ditch was perfect).

Very grateful for advice on what you chaps in the States use, noting that it's a bit like 'what's the best ice cream' question.

Thanks.

Up here in canada Autoglym is sold through Canadian Tire which is our discount everything store  - sort of like Pep Boys and a glorified hardware store combined. So if we can get it cheap there should be sources in the states where it is cheap.

I would call up autoglym and see who distrubutes for them.   Us Brit car types are cheap.

Thanks, guys. But I wondered about the alternatives to Autoglym.

I've been trawling the interweb and have seen a host of posts about Maguires. Is that any good?

James,

I use Meguires and find their products excellent from their clay through the cleaners and waxes and swirl removal gear to their crystal finishes.  Do my car with the clay about once every 9 months and it always amazes me how well it comes up. Never even knew about the clay products until Mark (Iconic) showed me what is was and how quite a few years ago.

Almost any clay bar will get you excellent results.  I also like Meguiars as well as Griots Garage products.  I don't think you would be disappointed with either.  One of the waxes that I particularly like (that I learned from the Rolls Club) is Collinite 476 wax.  And it has a great smell.  If you are interested in really getting spectacular results check out the Chemical Guys website.  Their polishes come in grades and I love using an orbital polisher with them for Concours results.
