Help With Ordering Carpet Replacement Kit
« on: May 15, 2016, 19:59:32 »
I am in the process of ordering a new carpet kit.  My factory Data Card indicates "120" upholstery combination.  Tracking that down identifies the leather as "cognac 2402" and the carpet as "brown 6454".
When ordering from German Auto Tops (https://www.germanautotops.com/mercedes-benz-w113-1963-1971-230sl-250sl-280sl-carpet-kit?options=cart )  There is a choice for "loop" or "square weave".  Which is correct for me?
Then their "brown" does not have a "6454" code.  Does anyone know if it is the same brown.
Thank you for your help,
250SL Franco

The 250sl had square weave carpet. As far as the color you should contact several vendors for samples. Then find an area of your existing carpet that has not been exposed to sunlight etc. to compare. Like under seat perhaps. Check the vendors list on this site for carpet suppliers. From other posts it seems "Gahh" has the best match.

Agree 100% with Tyler.  Get the samples as the codes that the sellers use don't necessarily agree with the original codes.  I used WOrld Upholstery but GAHH is excellent as well.  The 250SL had square weave and that is what I used.

That's right, the Tufted carpet came with the 280SL, end of 1967. I attach a picture showing different square weave carpet qualities. 7 loops per inch was original in the 60's; the one on the right. Beware when comparing vendor samples. Note: borrowed picture, credit of Alfred E (66andBlue)

Unfortunately the choices for German square weave carpets are very limited now.
Almost every vendor here in the USA gets the same carpet from one or two importers/whole sale companies (for example: http://www.veteranco.com/).
None of them are the ones with the higher number of loops as I described here:

Franco, what you should ask is whether you can select the border color, is it a fabric or vinyl band? If you have a manual shift then ask how the rubber collar around the shifter is sewn in, etc. John at GAT will know.

Thank you for the Links...good discussion on the topic.  GAHH is about 50% more expensive than German Auto Tops, but per pictures it looks to be more "quality" material.  Thanks all for the input!
