Anyone know about Porsche 928 GTS'?
« on: October 14, 2015, 13:20:14 »
I'm looking for a 2+2 and whilst I'd love an earlier 911-shape (eg 993) it's out of my price range. I had a friend a few years back who had a 928 with (I think) a 5.7L 5 speed. It was amazing. However, I know zlich about them and would very much like to get a few pointers on reliability, things to look for, etc if I were to take this forward. Usual knowledge required for used car purchase, etc.

Any advice gratefully received.

James,
Bodies are generally out of aluminum and very soft to bend.
Check for accident history and gap lines.
Generally you follow the protocol when buying any used car.
They are generally robust and straightforward.
Some things are very complex on these.
I worked in the junkyard in my younger days and had a customer who wanted both front fenders.
About 50 screws and bolts holding each on.  Some large and obvious ones, and many hidden small ones, bolts and screws, that is.
Check with the local Porsche club for hints and tips, and maybe a member has one for sale.

Thanks, Walter. I'll take a look on t'interweb for a forum. Hadn't actually thought of that. I've heard that they aren't the easiest of cars to maintain. I guess that at the time they were pushing new boundaries, hence some of the probably complexity.

Jamie,
are you looking specifically for a GTS,  the “Holy Grail” of Collectability"?

Looks like less than 3000 were made (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_928) and nice ones are starting to now cost more than when new.

I have had a Porsche 928 s4 GT and a 850I BMW.  The 850i was hands down the winner in all respects.  I think the 850CSI (read M8) is a great bargain and a WOW car! I think you can get them under 50K.

Aldred,

Thanks for the info. It seems after a little trawling of the web that 928GTS seem to suffer the same pricing issues as Pagodas; greedy dealers seem to be the root cause. Pricing is variable.

Bob,

Funnily enough I've also been looking at 850s because I think they're a cracking car for peanuts. Could you just give me a flavour of why the BMW is such a better proposition? I'm genuinely interested.

Thanks,

James
