wire holders/clips in engine bay
« on: June 16, 2015, 11:32:40 »
My 230SL is in the shop with engine out. Thought it would be a good time to redo/paint engine bay and do some overall work. My question is about if there are supposed to be "wire clips or holders" to hold the electrical wires/hoses in place on the sides of the engine bay.  If so, where should these be placed? Fenders and well wells were replaced 30 years ago and likely any previous clips were never replaced. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!!!!!!!

Amy,

Sad to say that whoever is working on your car should have taken photos of everything prior to removing anything...that way you'd have a record.
I'm sure your car had much of what it needed prior to removal; even if the inner fenders were replaced, were your various wiring looms just flopping about in the engine bay?

There are a few folks here that have pretty straight 230SLs and can hopefully supply some photos. Most of these clips are still available from either Classic Center, Authentic Classics or others, so replacing yours shouldn't be an issue.

This can be tricky, and I hope these folks take this as the compliment it is meant, but I find a lot of high quality photos of high quality cars here http://motoringinvestments.com   No affiliation, but their pictures have answered a lot of questions for me.

Good luck,

John

Hi Amy,

I have a 230SL in the shop for a engine compartment detailing right now. I have lots of detail photos for location and type of clips. I can email them to you direct if you like. Here are some sample pics....

Joe,

Thank You! I would greatly appreciate these photos. Specifically looking for the clips and their locations for any of the wires near the fenders/ wheel wells. I appear to have most of the clamps still in place near or under the "washer bag area"  near fuse box, etc. but it appears to have loose wires on the side of the tank which holds the anti-freeze.

I wish I had taken pictures as Michael had suggested 30 years ago when Dad had done the body work the first time but didn't know to do those things. Many clips were removed at that time.

Again, thanks for any info!!!!

Take Care!!!

Amy

JA17,
Perhaps you could help me out here.
I need a detail picture of the brake & fuel pipe fittings on the left side of the engine bay for a LHD car. (Everything I have here is RHD).
Specifically, the clamp that secures the fuel pipes and rear brake line to the left chassis rail just forward of the steering box.
I did find exactly the picture I'm looking for on here last week; it was of a green car but the picture wasn't sharp enough for my purposes and now I can't find it again anyway.
Thanks in advance.
Colin

Amy, I have lots of photos of my engine bay so let me know if you need pictures of any particular areas.

I am in the same boat as you on this one so took lots of pictures as it was coming apart

I don't suppose you have any of the throttle linkage before you removed it?

(I am assembling a LHD car that came in pieces It's only at times like this that you realise how much of these cars has escaped my scrutiny over the years!)
