Three point seat belts removal question
« on: April 12, 2015, 03:41:12 »
for all the discussions.on this I can't find how you actually go about removing the standard three point seat belts.

Are all the anchor points threaded?

Are there nuts hiding somewhere that I need access to and not lose?

I hate to get these out and not be able to get the new ones I have back in.

I've ordered those Kangol retractables off eBay. With the pound a little cheaper vs. the dollar, I bit the bullet.

71 280 SL US model.

Any help is appreciated.

each bolt can be removed as the threaded nuts are fixed in place together with the backing plates.  The new ones should be able to be just bolted straight in however as retractables you may want to read on the forum how some do it so that the unit is hidden.  Do a search on seat belt fitting. There is a MB service bulletin for fitting retractable belts into the 113

Andy,

Installing this as Garry described makes a huge aesthetic difference.

Thank you two.  I will look at the seat belt guide from mercedes, and see if it is doable for me.

I grew up without seat belts, but the police seem pretty testy about it these days.

Take care, Andy

Andy,
Your welcome. One more advice as I also bought the Kangol retractable 3 point seat belts (believe from the same source on eBay (new old military supply stock from England).

I found that the buckle that goes behind the shoulder is a piece that is badly designed in these otherwise great belts. At least in the case of my belts the buckles were made with sharp edges, which in the long run damaged the belts. I replaced that buckles with those from modern belts and the problem was fixed.

Well, I installed one using the existing points, given that my welding skills are lacking. The Buckle behind the shoulder seems smooth enough, but given the inset at the shoulder point location, it's not at the right angle to work optimally. I'm thinking about getting a bigger bolt and a short sleeve to extend the shoulder point out a bit so it can swing free.

I can definitely see the advantage of changing the mounting point for the retractor, but doesn't look to easy.
