A $235K VW bus !

With only 6400 miles the price could be justified. Or not?

I have seen an early restored one sell for $200k USD fairly recently.  Both the ‘splitty’ model with the split screen and the ‘bay window’ round single windscreen prices have been skyrocketing like Pagodas recently. Maybe even more so.

My ‘74 Bay camper is a great fun unit to drive.  Last year I took it on a 12,000 km trip over to the west and northern Australia.  Next year I am taking it for another 12,000 km trip this time to the north eastern tip then into the center of Australia and south back home. Takes about 2 - 3 months, only doing a maximum of 200km in any one day, stopping camping for days at a time along the coast and always allowing for it to break down somewhere and taking a few days to get fixed :o

I have also been looking for another Single Cab utility/pickup but they are hard to find and I have not had much success over the past year of looking.

Its funny seeing them in the shed side by side.  Two very opposite German marques.

Thats funny James,

Had not thought of that but now you mention it your average shed is in the garden, my shed, also in the garden has four car bays, own power, 2Kw feed in solar system on the roof, its own water supply from a 20,000 litre water tank collecting from the roof and measures 7 metres (25ft) by 12 metres (40ft). Havent put the car hoist in yet but already it is not big enough :o

I have another garage for the modern cars.

Still, a great shed.

At first I thought you wrote: "...doing a maximum of 200 km/h in any one day", and I thought: adding that Porsche engine to a VW Bus really does wonders for the performance.  ;D

Then I read your sentence again. I reckon 200 kms is a good 4 hours driving then ?

The Bus craze continues unabated, the record is now $302K!  :o
"It’s the most easily recognized van or commercial vehicle on the planet,” says Brian Moody, executive editor for Autotrader.com. “Low operating cost, low purchase cost when Volkswagen made them. Globally, you can talk to a Brazilian who has great VW Bus memories. A Mexican. A European. An Indian. Not everyone had a Mustang convertible.”
But over the last decade, this once-humble workhorse has become something it’s never been: one of the hottest gets in the vintage auto world..”

Still have it and a new shed is currently being built to house it and the Pagoda together with a hoist and now 20kw solar together with a 10kw battery to power the house once it is completed.
I paid $8000Aust for mine but a bit more than that to restore it.......

My all-time favorite Volkswagen Bus was this one. Seen in 2003 in the Paddock of the 24hrs of Daytona. Two front bucket seats, 4-wheel disc brakes. Flat six powering it don't know exactly what. My wife standing next to it is only 5 ft tall!

This is my self-restored bus, but it is not worth $200k USD.  ;)

Again something else.

Hi Garry,
when you have finished your current shed project you can start on another challenging one  :D

I have a friend in Calgary and another in The Netherlands who are VW Bus fans. I like the global appeal, as mentioned in the quote Garry posted. The first photo here is a lovely example from the Stahls Auto Collection, where I visited last week. Then I noticed the way the front of Garry's VW Bus is painted reminded me of the design on the front of the V200 locomotive, as in
https://media04.lokalkompass.de/imagepost/2019/02/10/9/410049_XL.jpg?1549809761
I wonder if this is a coincidence, or did some designer influence both of these?
If I were a billionaire, German trains would also be one of my hobbies  :)

A recent Hot-Rod and Performance show in Cleveland had an unusual amount of Volkswagen Bugs on display. I sort of liked that. It was a nice departure from the much repeated "Clown Car" theme
