Additives in the Oil to Stop Smoke
« on: September 04, 2004, 22:02:19 »
I spent the better part of the whole summer working in my garage on the engine. In April I blew a head gasket and took the opportunity to give it a topside rebuild. Thanks to the Benz Dr. for his expertise and work in rebuilding the head.

Once it was reassembled, she smoked! I tried just about all the remedies short of sending in the IP for a check-up. As a last attempt, I added some STP "Smoke Treatment" to the oil. Now the smoke is almost completely gone. I run Valvoline 10w-30 in the pan.

So here's my question: Has anybody else tried this stuff? Is there a better product out there that's better for an IP and the injectors?

Mark - what color is (or was) the smoke? Blue or gray?

It's kind of light colored.  Mostly gray but there's got to be some blue in it.  The STP Smoke Treatment went into the oil, so oil is in the fumes 'cause the Treatment stopped most of the smoke.

When I was young, I thought, if I would grow older, I'd know everything. Now I'm old and I'm still learning new things. I'm gonna try this stuff. My car smokes big time coasting down from higher speeds (like 80 to 40)

I just heard a very similar story today about an engine rebuild that still had the blue smoke.  Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders and gas tank solved the problem.
