blue foil decal trunk for 230sl?
« on: August 06, 2014, 11:42:40 »
I have this blue foil decal near the trunk lid catch on my restored euro spec 1964 230 SL. Is this correct for the vintage? I suspect not...

I have this label on my 66 230.  I have always thought it was correct.

But I am no expert.

My decal is the same as an Norm's picture. It is damaged so I was thinking of replacing it if it is accurate for the car. Thanks!

Thanks James.

This won't solve anything, but for reference, I used James Taylor's "Factory - Original Mercedes SL  the originality guide to Mercedes-Benz SL & SLC models, 1963 - 2003" published in 2012.

The problem is on page 24 they show a picture of a 230 SL with the horizontal spare and the decal (red) on the left side of the latch.  Then on page 45 they show a 280 SL with the decal (red) on the right side of the latch.

What is correct?  I'm sure I don't know but the right side makes more sense because my trunk light activation button is on the left side and leaves a "dent" on the decal.  You can see the mark left on the picture I posted earlier.  Then of course there is blue vs. red which is anybody's guess which is correct for which model, year, destination, etc.

To muddy the water even more, the picture that Bob Geco provided for reference when I purchased the label has the blue label on the left side, but when I looked closer, the verticle spare, on what must have been an early 230, was on the right side.  That leads me to believe the picture was somehow reversed since I am not aware of the vertical spare ever being on the right side.

In the end, whichever is correct I can still sleep at night!  :)  But I am sure any support you can provide will be appreciated by all.

As we have seen in another post, James Taylors book has as many mistakes as the Merridith book to the point that he appears to have carried over several myths that are wrong for the Pagoda and it is not a reference book you want to stake your Pagoda on.

Just for information, here is the picture that Bob sent me regarding placement.  Looking closer, I do not believe this is a 113.

Norm, you are right: it seems the gas tank inlet cover is also on the right side where the spare tire is. If the picture was mirror-reversed, it would be on the left and obstructed from view in the picture...

Norm,
it looks like the trunk of a W111, perhaps a 250SE because those frequently have a blue sticker in the location shown in Bob's photo.

I don't have the blue, but have a red one on the underside of the boot lid with correct tyre pressures - right smack in the middle :-)

My '68 280SE W111 had a blue original #000 584 50 39. I believe red is now available from the Classic Center. Other sources have the correct blue. That looks to be a W111 trunk. Location is the same.

I am getting a new set of decals from Bob G. He tells me the blue foil decal is correct for an early 230sl and goes on the left side of the trunk latch. It correlates with the restoration done on my car. The new (now in need of replacement) decal was put there by the restorer.
It would be interesting to see if the are later cars that came with the blue decal. That said, I am convinced Bob researched the whole thing extensively and "toroughly" ...

Gents, in case you are thinking of putting the blue foil decal next to your trunk lock catch, look at the attached picture that directly compares my battered original to one of the commercial offerings as part of a "pagoda" set.  The size is wrong, the color is wrong, and I saw at least one spelling mistake.
The original is actual metal foil, the repro is some kind of metallized mylar material. You get what you pay for.

Has anyone purchased the blue foil sticker from this source?
http://oldtimer-ersatzteile24.de/Blauer-Chromfolien-Aufkleber-Hinweis-Reifendruck-fuer-Mercedes-Oldtimer

It looks like the original from what I can tell from the picture and description, but would like to know about your experience if you purchased it. Thanks,
Jerome

Update: I magnified the picture on the item description and found out it is the version with the spelling mistake (unlike the original).  The blue color and font alignment seemed better, but it has (at least one) spelling mistake.

The search continues.  The red one is easily found NOS, but not the blue.
