« on: December 17, 2013, 07:45:37 »
have searched here but cant find any definitive location details or a template. i have bought the correct ones for the car but dont have any exact measurements. i do see that the passenger one is supposed to go about an inch further back than the driver but i dont have the location to start with.

Hi Russell,

I installed one some years ago. I applied masking tape to the door area where it would be installed and marked the identical position where the drivers mirror was installed. I then got my wife to hold the mirror and I sat in the drives seat and she  moved it forward and back until I could see without the A pillar getting in the way. I think it is a smidge further back than the drivers side but if you keep them the same distance from the chrome strip on top of the door, when you look at the car from the front (or rear) they look identical.

crazy not to have one though

It is definitely further back than the drivers one which is the error I made on mine that now I only have a view out of about half of the mirror.

However, I don't know the correct position. We need an original RHD with fitted mirror to measure.  I will move mine back as much as I can with out revealing the wrong holes at some point.

Russell

I have both mirrors that I don't think have ever been moved. The door has been repainted once, but I'm sure the mirrors were either factory or dealer fitted. I have recently replaced the opaque plastic gaskets, but other than that I think they are stock.

The DRIVERS side is 62mm from the leading (front) edge of the door to the start of the chrome base, and the PASSENGERS side is 72mm. That is the chrome not the rubber gasket.

Hope that helps and would be happy to hear if it differs from any others out there.

Russell, I added a passenger side mirror to my 230SL, same location as shown in Richards pictures, which look to be the same on either side.  I sit back when I drive so I can see about 75% of the mirror.  If you have removed the door panel you will feel a reinforcing plate on the inside of the door where the mirror should be placed.  It is not that big and will give you an idea where to place the mirror.

Thanks for the break Russell!
The re-inforcing plate won't be there unless the car already had the mirror.
Merry Christmas to one and all.

My car has never had a passenger side mirror until I put one on last year.  The reinforcing plate was there.  All you have to do is stick you hand up inside the door and feel around where the mirror would sit.  If it is there you will feel it.

Russell,

As for your questions, If my recollection is correct, you started to ask questions exactly one year ago... and if I remember well, one of the first questions was about a decent book/album about Pagodas for a gift (wasn't it for yourself ;))

In my view, your questions about the mirror prove that your Pagoda related involvement evolved dramatically :)

well spotted, ;D  i might well post here my story one day but i bought my pagoda back in November 2012 and it is still in bits but painted.
thanks to colin i now have a four million bits to put it back together and now the final shedload of parts off to the chromers and back by end of january when work will start to take her the other direction.
i am an aston fan so i know serious pain but i had no idea i would endure so much with a little Merc

Mine doesn't have a passenger mirror, I don't really need it anymore, I've gotten used to just looking back or using my rear view!
