Carpet type in early 280SL
« on: June 04, 2013, 00:55:45 »
I'm getting a little confused with what carpet type would have originally been installed in the very early 280SLs.

May option code 256 suggests the interior was Parchment 8014 leather and Dark Brown 8015 carpet. The technical manual seems to suggest that all 280SLs had multi loop tufted carpet not boucle. However, Koellner's website seems to suggest that early 280SLs had boucle carpets: http://www.pagode.info/25.htm

I am trying to get hold of the build sheet for this combination to check. In the meantime, can anyone confirm which is right?

Thanks

David

I am having work done on my 1968 280SL. There is solid black loop pile carpeting in it now. Something tells me it is wrong. Is it supposed to be the salt & pepper look loop pile carpeting?

Where in California is  the best restoration upholstery shop to have this done? I plan on having this done some time next year, as I had the mechanicals and unnecessary wires and broken parts repaired so it is safe to drive.

Also I need some help with the soft top. The center bow will not come up . It was sent to SL Tech Gernold. My mechanic and restorer is not too versed in the Soft top installation. Something silly must be wrong . I do not blame anyone. Working on theses cars now approaching 50 year and the good people who once new them have left us for a better place.

I need a Pagoda whisper to do the work.

Any help would most  certainly be appreciated.

Respectfully

David,
my believe is that Koellner got this wrong, 280SL cars did not have the Bouclé (square-weave) type carpets. Convince yourself and take a look at all the cars at this site: http://www.motoringinvestments.com/MainPage.htm
My bet is that you will not find a 280SL with square-weave carpets, only velour (or Tufting in MB parlance).
