What the heck is this distributor?
« on: July 02, 2012, 20:23:00 »
1965 230SL with 280SL or 280SE engine...

I'm trying to sort through a non-starting problem, and found the distributor number is 231 116 061. Yes, I am sure this is the number. I cannot find what car it is for. Anyway, the car used to run fine with it. I need to know what ballast resistor, points and condensor to use with it.
Next question: How can I tell if a coil is ok? I got 4 ohms across the poles.
I don't think the ignition is transistorized anymore.
Thanks,
Joe

The 061 is for a late 280SL with CD ignition. This was replaced with the 062 ( or maybe the other way around ) which is basically the same but has some changes to the vacuum box and co-axial distributor wire.

I've now ordered two set of points, condensor and a rotor for my 280SL. The first order came from AutoHausAZ, they were not correct. The second from Buds Benz ordered from the number on the distributor itself. I have a totally different set of points but they still are not correct. What bothers me is you hear a loud tapping noise from the cap when the engine is running. You can also feel the tapping in the cap. I'm not sure what to do thus far, hoping the tapping will quit with the correct parts. Any help is appreciated.
