Aldi
« on: March 12, 2012, 23:32:52 »

New advert that I picked up a few days ago.
Aldi is one of the largest food discounters in Germany; they're around in the US too here and there (at least in Madison, WI).

No great pic of our Beloved Ones but better than nothing.
UK model, RHD, chrome rearview mirror; so, it must be an early 250 or something earlier. ;)

There is another pic of the car showing barely only its right Euro headlight; too much covered by the lady. :o

Enjoy!

That's a good pick up Achim!

Aldi have established a solid presence here in Australia. I will make sure to check their catalogues when we shop there later this week

Although Aldi does not have a presence here in South Africa, I can't help but wonder where that photo with the model was taken...

If you look carefully, the number plate on that car starts with "CA".
Here if owners register their cars in the municipal district of Cape Town, then the number plates all start with "CA" (black letters on white reflective background as per current legislation).
Older number plates form the '60's had silver lettering on a black metal backing.

It is not uncommon for advertising companies to use Cape Town and surrounds as a backdrop for advertisements.

Now, that could also be from another country where the number plate coincidentally resembles a local one...  ;)

Jaco - I thought exactly the same, especially when you see it has RHD.

Lived in Cape town for 12 years, but although was involved in the old car movement all of that time I don't know of a Pagoda there. I was at the Franschoek motor museum a couple of months ago but don't remember seeing one there either. I also have a listing of the Crankhandle club (the most active classic and vintage car club) and there isn't one currently listed. There must a couple though.

Interesting.

Here is a new one for you guys. :D
They must have gotten scared by Jaco's comments, thus the number plate is now hidden. ;)
But I am sure it is the same car. ;D

Enjoy!

Yes, Jaco, good observation. 8)
Must have been taken from any warm climate.
You can see "fresh green" in the background; something we haven't seen here on the old continent for more than 10 months. Personally, I doubt the pics were taken a year ago... So, it is not unlikely that they chose ZA for the photo shooting about half a year ago or so (You are approaching autumn now, aren't you?).
Or any other "always warm climate". CA, CA?  California ...?? :D ;D :o

What are the British views towards this number plate?

Certainly the nice blonde lady is enjoying that the "Pagoda Season" is starting all over again. That's why she is smiling. :D

Being in advertising, the photo is probably a stock photo bought somewhere on the internet. But a funny contrast between a nice car and the worst discount supermarket chain ever :-)

They - and Lidl - do some decent deals occasioally on things like trickle chargers, hand tools and the like

But other than that...

Maybe they did...   ;D

In the second advert you posted Achim, it looks like they used a white or silver car though...

Richard,

Having lived in Cape Town myself for a good number of years, I can assure you that there are quite a number of pagodas there.
Most of the owners belong to the Western Cape region of the Mercedes-Benz club of SA.

Have a look at the following page (the forum page of the club):

http://www.mercedesbenzclub.co.za/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=48

In the second photo (top left) you will see a number of pagodas that was taken a couple of years ago at a pagoda specific gathering. Most of those cars are local to Cape Town and surrounding areas.
A few came from further north in the country.

Where you ever involved with the Mercedes-Benz club whilst in Cape Town?

The photo with the girl on top of the green 280 was also featured in Classic & Sportscars a few years ago in an article about car photography of the 60's and 70's - seems like both the cars and the women looked better (more curves?) back then...

looks like cars portrayed in here remain always classy and most of them in great shape. At the age of our cars, the models are certainly more curvy, but that's about what's one can say without transgressing good taste.
